As the young editor of a campus literary magazine, Asa S. Bushnell ’21 received a number of submissions from a recent alumnus, desperate to be published.
He brought with him his wife and young son, Asa Bushnell III, who 12 years later would be described by PAW as “the most upstanding roller-skater on Vandeventer Avenue,” and 22 years later would graduate from Princeton with the Class of 1947.
His son, Asa Bushnell III ’47, says that Bushnell II took the debate over tickets more or less in stride, but what did get him in a lather was the inevitable “loudmouth” fan at the games complaining about the officiating.

ASA S. Asa Smith Bushnell, governor of Ohio from 1896 to 1900, was a Springfield businessman who was identified with the Foraker wing of the Republican party.
Bushnell's father, Daniel, was an active worker on the Underground Railroad, and a cousin, Simeon Bushnell, was imprisoned for his part in the Oberlin-Wellington rescue case.
Bushnell's firm flourished, and his holding in it was the principal source of his large fortune.
