Asahel Curtis was the most prominent Seattle photographer of the early twentieth century, as well as a noted outdoorsman and regional booster.
Asahel Curtis was born in 1874 in Minnesota to Johnson Asahel Curtis (1840-1887), a reverend; and Ellen Sheriff (1844-1912).
Asahel's mother was Ellen Sheriff (1844-1912) who was born in Pennsylvania, and both her parents were born in England.

Edward Sheriff Curtis was born in 1868 near Whitewater, Wisconsin, to The Rev. Johnson Asahel Curtis (1840-1887) and Ellen Sheriff (1844-1912).
In 1895 Curtis met and photographed Princess Angeline (c1800-1896) aka Kickisomlo, the daughter of Chief Sealth of Seattle.
Curtis hires Adolph Muhr (?-1912) to run the studio while he is away working on photography and trying to get financing in New York and Washington, D.C. 1904 President Theodore Roosevelt invites Curtis to photograph his children after seeing Curtis' winning photograph in "The Prettiest Children in America" contest published in Ladies' Home Journal.

 Asahel Curtis Trail Native Plant Walk
The Asahel Curtis picnic area and trails are right along Interstate 90 at exit 47 (and in fact much of the preservation area is centered between the east bound and west bound lanes of the freeway) on the way to Snoqualmie Pass.
The Asahel Curtis natural area has been a destination for WNPS field trips and for field trips taken by the Native Plant Stewardship classes, but has never been hi-lighted as a Walk of the Month.
Asahel Curtis is not an out of the way or secret place; but within its boundaries are much of what is precious about our northwest forests.

Although Asahel Curtis applied unsuccessfully for the position of park superintendent in 1918, he seemed to enjoy his role and vantage point outside the government.
Curtis also sent a prospectus to the Sierra Club, dangled the club's list of supplies before a couple of prospective packers, and solicited support from the Pierce County Board of Commissioners for trail repairs outside the park boundary.
The committee appointed Curtis as chairman and T.H. Martin, a Tacoma businessman, as secretary.

In 1903, Washington State photographer Asahel Curtis began recording the then brand new Seattle Malting and Brewing Georgetown plant.
For his first return of many, Curtis struck this vertical “portrait” view of, left to right, the Malt-House (with the Moorish minaret chimney), Brew House (with its twin ornamental tops) and Stock-House on January 25, 1904.
By 1904, this was the largest brewery west of the Mississippi River and with addition upon addition through 1912 it became “world class” — the sixth largest in the world.

 EASTON GLACIER CHANGES THROUGH TIME
Between 1984 and 1990, NCGCP observed the terminus behavior of 117 glaciers, 47 glaciers annually, all 117 are currently retreating.
In the summer of 1908 Asahel Curtis joined a a party of Mountaineers in climbing from the terminus of the Boulder Glacier to the summit of Mt. Baker.
In 2003 the North Cascade Glacier Climate Project will retrace the steps of both Asahel Curtis and William Long measuring the change in glacier length, glacier thickness, and vegetation development below the glacier.

Except for the Asahel Curtis postcard of the Olympian traveling through the Kittitas Valley on the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul line (shown above), the color illustrations which appear here are from an exclusive edition scenic guide book published and originally copyrighted by The Van-Noy Interstate Company.
The format is that of a scrapbook made up of dark colored pages upon which are glued 6"x8" color prints of interesting travel scenes.
A. Curtis was in Ellensburg in 1912 and 1914 taking pictures of the area.

Study sites are as follows: Site 1: Large, old Douglas-fir (DF) and western redcedar trees (WRC)(located just north of where small highway goes under west bound I-90, Site 2: Alpental, Site 3 : Asahel Curtis Natural Area, Site 4 : about 0.6 miles up the Annette Lake trail, about an 80 to 100-year-old Douglas-fir stand.
After returning from respective trips, you should see if you can located the various study sites on the aerial photographs.
