Asahi acquired a 19.9% stake in Australian brewery giant Elders IXL in 1990.

Asahi Breweries has cancelled plans to sell beer in plastic bottles, sending a wake-up call to manufacturers and governments across the globe to get their recycling operations in order.
For their part, Asahi says the decision to cancel the roll-out of beer in plastic bottles is based on acceptance that a proper recycling system has not been yet been established in the country.
The Asahi withdrawal of its PET bottle plan is a symptom of the fact that Japan is far behind both Europe and the US in terms of PET recycling facilities.

Last year, the brewer achieved its goal of reducing its carbon-dioxide emissions to 184 kilograms per kiloliter of beer brewed, down 22 percent from the 1990 level, two years ahead of its original schedule.

Greenpeace Japan has been actively soliciting Asahi to relinquish the plan to introduce the newly invented "recycle-unfriendly and unreturnable" PET bottle through open letters, cyber-action, and web opinion poll, as well as giving the company "CSR Disqualification Grand Prize," ever since the company had announced the plan in July.
This is a result of actions taken by citizens who are tired of irresponsible corporations that produce waste.
