Asano Naganori (浅野長矩 September 28, 1667 – April 21, 1701) was the daimyo of the Ako han in Japan (1675 - 1701).
In 1680 he was apponted to the office of Takumi no Kami, the head of carpentary at the imperial court, but this office was nominal as were other offices granted to samurai at that time and only had an honorific meaning.
He adopted his younger brother Asano Nagahiro titled Daigaku and Nagahiro was admitted as his heir by the Shogunate.

Asano's samurai were unsure of how to act in the wake of this disaster.
The Shogun, still concerned that the affair might not be ended, ordered the arrest of Daigaku Asano and sentenced him to confinement in the main villa of the Asano family, thus ending any remaining hope that the House of Asano might be reestablished.
Asano's case had been dealt with, from deed to death, in under 12 hours.

Asano Daigaku Nagahiro, Takuminokami's young brother and adopted son as heir was allowed by Tokugawa Shogunate to establish his name, though his territory was reduced to a tenth of the original.
Finally Asano was appointed the daimyo of this area and Hiroshima served as the capital of Hiroshima han during the Edo period.

The Asano name is perhaps most well-known as a result of the story of the Forty-seven Ronin, whose lord was Asano Naganori, the head of a branch of the family enfeoffed at Ako (Harima Province, 53,000 koku).

Asano subscribed to this practice and his presents were a measure of the service expected.
Asano wrote his farewell poem recalling his 36 years, scattered like petals, and then without hesitation disemboweled himself according to the rules of seppuku, after which an assistant cut off his head.

The act of revenge occurred in the early morning hours of January 31, when a band of the former retainers of Asano Naganori (1665-1701), the late lord of Ako, attacked the residence of Kira Yoshinaka and hacked of his head.
Kira was chief of protocol in the shogun's castle and (on purpose or not) had failed to inform Asano, who had the task to receive a group of envoys sent by the emperor in Kyoto, of the finer points of protocol.
Asano, apparently a hotheaded man, at one point during the reception ceremony grew so exasperated with Kira, that he threateningly drew his sword from its sheath.

The first act, culminating in the seppuku of Lord Asano, details the conflict between the young lord and Kira, the Shogun's master of ceremonies, and is, in my opinion, the most interesting as it unfolds logically, tragically, and inevitably towards the spilling of blood in the Shogun's castle.
Asano and Kira, at least in this stage of the film, are fully realized and three-dimensional characters, and their conflict can be understood on several levels: idealism versus pragmatism; rural versus urban; and, most centrally, a conflict between different conceptions of honor.
In the movie, by contrast, Oishi makes reference to restoring the clan and questions Asano's judgment at the castle, but it is absolutely unclear in the context of the film whether this represents his true beliefs or is simply part of the feint to divert attention from the plot to kill Kira.
