Molefi Kete Asante - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Asante's greatest contribution is generally considered to be his theory of Afrocentricity, a re-examination of traditional scholarship from the perspective of African and African diasporal peoples.
Asante's early contributions to the theory of cultural diversity in the 70s and 80s is not as widely known.
He has been enstooled as a traditional king, Nana Okru Asante Peasah, Kyldomhene,in Tafo, Akyem, Ghana (1995) and was invited to address an African Union Conference of Intellectuals of Africa and the Diaspora at Dakar (2004).

 [No title]
Asante's notion that family and community mean more to African Americans is lost on me. Family is one of the values which is very strong in our family (and may be one factor leading to why Asante chooses to associate Africans with Romans).
Asante moves on to recognize this sense of harmony along with tradition as keys to Afrocentric ideology in that they stress the plight of the community rather than the individual.
Asante finds that the direction of African-American communication, although harmonious in nature, is different from the communication of other African cultures in that the myths generated by African-Americans through this system of communication are often used to serve as appeasement for the hardships they have experienced while in this country.

 Asante People
It was not until the end of the 17th century, however, that the grand Asante Kingdom emerged in the central forest region of Ghana, when several small states united under the Chief of Kumasi in a move to achieve political freedom from the Denkyira.
In return for acting as the middlemen in the slave trade, the Asante received firearms, which were used to increase their already dominant power, and various luxury goods that were incorporated into Asante symbols of status and political office.
The stool was presented to the people after the defeat of the Denkyira, and Anokye declared that it contained the spirit of the whole of the Asante nation and that all of the strength of the nation depended on the safety of the stool.

Indeed, Asante explicitly characterizes Marx as a Eurocentric materialist
Asante's responses to this racism appeals to Diopian historiography; his intent is to revise the story of the fl African in such a way that a new sense of subjectivity will be constructed within the individual that comes through a collective Afrocentric consciousness shared by all members of the African diaspora worldwide.

He also observed that the Asantehen "Wore a pair of gold castanets on his finger and thumb, which he clapped to enforce silence … the belts of the guards were cased in gold and covered in small jaw bones of the same metal".
Further Asante gold treasures came to London in 1874, when a British military force attacked Kumasi after threats to trading posts on the coast and demanded 50,000 ounces (1.55 tonnes) indemnity, which was largely in gold beads and ornaments, of which some of the best are now in the Brtish Museum.

Introduction to Asante Kente Cloths : Ashanti Kente
The story of kente is closely interwoven with that of the Asante Empire and its' Royal Court based at Kumase, deep in the forest zone of southern Ghana.
The cloths woven in the nineteenth century for the court of the Asantehene, the king of the Asante empire were probably the ultimate achievement of the West African narrow-strip weavers art.
Away from the court cotton weaving supplied much of the everyday dress for the Asante people, in the form of striped cloths, mostly of indigo blue and white, until it was largely displaced by wax prints and other imported textiles in the present century.
