Coincidentally, as Asbury Park declined, Atlantic City was on the rise as gambling became legal in the late 1970's with the first Casino-Hotel opening in 1978.

Asbury Park, N.J. – Needy Asbury Park families got a taste of holiday goodwill Monday (11/20), as Asbury Partners teamed up with Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFandCS) of Greater Monmouth County to distribute 35 turkeys and canned food to provide Thanksgiving meals for families that might otherwise go without.
The drive was part of a 100-turkey donation to needy families of Asbury Park by Asbury Partners, with that include a distribution by the Asbury/Neptune Ministerial Alliance on Friday the 17th.
Asbury Partners is planning on working with the city and the Asbury Park Fire Department in December to distribute toys to needy children for the holidays.

Asbury Park is in the Sixth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 11th Legislative District.

Asbury Park -- Palace Amusements, a 110-year-old oceanfront landmark shut down a decade ago, is in danger of collapsing and is expected to be demolished shortly, city officials said yesterday.
A portion of the once-popular amusement house's second floor collapsed a week ago, prompting engineers to inspect and declare the structure to be in imminent danger of collapse, William Gray, the city's chief housing inspector, said yesterday.
Inspectors found part of the roof over another section of the building had previously collapsed, and there were a number of holes in the roof and two significant stress cracks on the exterior.

Bruce Springsteen and George Theiss, a former bandmate in The Castiles, were among a group of about 100 people who watched as a sign was unveiled naming the playground park in honor of the band's manager, Gordon "Tex" Vinyard.
The dedication ceremony was held at the Freehold YMCA Community Center, across the street from the park where Vinyard's home used to stand at Center and Jackson streets.
The idea to name the park after Tex Vinyard came about because he "helped so many kids back in the 1960s," said Freehold Mayor Michael Wilson, who himself had a band that practiced at the Vinyards' house.
