A third invertebrate group, comprising the acorn worms and their relatives, shows affinities with chordates and has sometimes been considered a chordate subphylum, but is now often classified in a phylum of its own, the Hemichordata.
The most prominent tunicates are the sea squirts (class Ascidiacea), which show affinities to other chordates only in the juvenile stage.

The Ascidiacea is the largest of the three Urochordate classes, and contains the most diversity of body forms.
They can be either solitary, social, or compound, with the latter category consisting of numerous small individual "zooids" that are contained within an enveloping gelatinous matrix (which can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from a sponge).

Little is known of the species composition, biodiversity and distribution of ascidians on southern African intertidal and subtidal reefs.

Ascidians, more commonly known as tunicates, (Class Ascidiacea) abound in all the oceans of the world, on the edge of the sea between tides, and on the sea floor from the low tide mark to the great depths of oceanic trenches.
They are members of the Subphylum Urochordata that are invertebrates that exhibit vertebrate features - they lack a backbone but posses four distinguishing chordate characteristics: at some point in the life cycle there can be found a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, gill slits and a postanal tail.
