It is solemn twenty-minute ceremony which was first preformed in April 1952 by students of the Hippocrateion High School of Kos at the Asclepieion of Kos in honor of some European doctors who were then visiting the birthplace of Hippocrates.
Six to twelve maidens in white, carrying baskets, descend slowly and rythmically the third set of steps of the Asclepieion in two lines, while in their midst a flute-player(s) dressed in tunic play a rhythmical piece of music.
When the basket-bearers reach the second terrace of the Asclepieion they scatter flowers on the altar of Apollo, (and Asclepius), and take their position around the altar, where the crowned man, in an evocative atmosphere, recites the Oath of Hippocrates.

This was largely full of Roman-era artifacts, which is hardly surprising since the Romans subjected the whole city (except Apollo's temple) to a kind of holocaust in 146 B.C., effectively calculated to cow the rest of Greece into submission.
The sphinx at left is of roughly the same archaic date as the temple, while the well-preserved hoplite's helmet at right, appropriately "Corinthian" in style (and curiously suggestive in shape), dates from the beginning of the classical period, the early fifth century B.C., the time of the Persian Wars.
The Asclepieion is in the foreground, and the hollow in the hillside beyond is the cavea of the theater.

Our first stop was the Asclepieion, reached via this paved street lined with columns (which later much helped me to identify the site, at considerable distance, from the acropolis).
Though the city had a large theater up on the acropolis from Hellenistic times (and nothing found anywhere around here was older than that, except some objets d'art likely brought in by early collectors), the Asclepieion boasted its own modest-sized theater, built facing south just outside the Ionic north stoa of the courtyard.
Dramatic and musical performances here, according to a guidebook I purchased on the site, were conceived as a kind of therapy.
