Asgardians (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Asgardians are extremely long lived and age at an extremely slow pace as compared to human beings, unlike the Olympians who cease to age once reaching adulthood.
The bodies of the Asgardians possess a degree of invulnerability to physical attack, with the average Asgardian male and female being durable enough to resist the impact of high caliber bullets without sustaining injury.
All Asgardians are born with the potential to wield and control mystical energies for a variety of purposes, although only a certain few have been observed to have developed this ability to any noticeable degree.

Thor (Marvel Comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This status quo in the comics was shaken up in the 1980s under the authorship of Walt Simonson, beginning with Thor's encounter with the monsterous yet noble alien called Beta Ray Bill.
After, by the combined powers of Thor and Bill's hammers, the Asgardians were returned to Asgard to find Odin gone, Thor declined to take the throne that was his birthright, instead passing the regency to Balder the Brave.
Appalled at the thought that the Asgardians' sacrifices meant nothing, bolstered by the human side that was his birthright from his mother, and strengthed by Odin placing him in the Don Blake identity for years, Thor resolved to end the cycle at ANY cost.

In the Marvel Universe, much of the public at large is aware of the Asgardians' existence, thanks to Thor's membership in The Avengers, but do not believe that they are the actual gods who were worshipped by the Scandinavian people.
He is sometimes erroneously said to be Loki's biological father, although various comics reiterate the mytholgical position that Loki is not related to Odin or Thor by blood.
Odin is presumed to be the son of Bor (father, one of the first Asgardians) and Bestla (mother, a frost giantess).

Odin is the most powerful of the Asgardians and is on par with the other leaders of the pantheons of gods, such as Zeus; he once fought Thanos to a standstill.
Like most other Asgardians, Odin is long-lived nearly to the point of immortality, possesses fantastic superhuman strength and durability, is immune to normal diseases, and has honed his skills in armed and unarmed combat for centuries.

Marvel Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though the concept of a shared universe was not new or unique to comics in 1961, writer/editor Stan Lee, together with several artists including Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, created a series of titles where events in one book would have repercussions in another title and serialized stories would show characters grow and change.
Unlike DC Comics, who uses the idea that interference with time by villains caused reality to reboot a few times, Marvel simply assumes that the stories happen in the space of years instead of decades; this is known as a sliding timescale.
Note that in Marvel Comics, the concept of a continuity is not the same as "dimension" or "universe"; for example, characters like Mephisto and Dormammu hail from alternate dimensions and the Celestials from another universe, but they all nevertheless belong to Earth-616.

Norse Mythology in Comic Books   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
True to his mythological foundation, the comic book Thor was not what one might consider a "quick study." The Son of Odin, though overflowing with bravery and determination, lacked the intelligence and wit to save himself from dastardly plans in both the myths and in the comics.
In the comic book series, Thor never acts "holier-than-thou," because he understands that he is not the dominant force in reality; perhaps the greatest example concerning Thor's rank as a soldier (and not a king) would be to examine his relationship with his father, Odin.
Throughout the history of this comic character, Odin has had a reputation as being a hard deity to please; the dual nature of his personality (his opportunities to be both fatherly and a harsh disciplinarian) is as prominent in modern appearances as it was in the Norse myths.

In the Icelandic Eddas Surtur (Old Norse Surtr) is the leader of the fire giants in the south, the ruler of Muspel, the realm of fire.
In addition, he is a superb hand-to-hand combatant, and is the strongest of all Asgardians, in the "Class 100" power range, or able to lift press far more than 100 tons, having fought the likes of The Hulk, Gladiator (Shi'ar) to a stand-still numerous times, and has even battled Superman (in crossovers).

Marvel Heroes Classic Roleplaying Game - Marvel RPG
The Asgardians refer to all of the major known inhabited realms of their cosmology as the "Nine Worlds".
In the Asgardian scheme of afterlife, the heroes and honored dead go to Valhalla, a special region of Asgard, the common dead go to Hel, and the dishonored dead (murderers and other evil-doers) go to Niffleheim.
In the Asgardians' account of the origin of their cosmology, Muspelheim, the land of fire, and Niffleheim, the land of ice, were said to predate recorded time, separated from one another by Ginnungagap, the Yawning Void.

Captain Comics Round Table > DEAD IS DEAD!!!!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
I guess the reason is for the simple fact that most comic book deaths are handled poorly, or done for the wrong reasons, a la Gwen Stacy.
One of the reasons that comics work is one of the reasons that faith is important: wonder.
In either case, that means that the cosmology of the comic world is vastly different from our own (and the second case is also the basis for many fictional works like Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" and an episode of Star Trek).

Comics by their very nature are a collaborative medium with the finished product reflecting the work and input of many creative artists.
However, for the purposes of this hand list to medieval-themed comics, I have chosen to focus on the contributions by writers (wr.), pencilers (pen.), inkers (ink.), and artists (art.), a category used when the functions of penciler and inker are combined.
Given the number of other comics set during World War Two, No. 19 is also interesting because Thor explains that Ragnarok occurred contemporaneous with the war on Earth, and the defeat of the Nazis was a reflection of the Asgardians' own defeat at the conclusion of Ragnarok.

Stories Without Words: A Bibliography with Annotations
Comics Stuff is an occasional publication showcasing aspects of comics collecting and indexing beyond the comic book and toy price guides.
It tells the story of, let's see, a worm, a cartoonist, and the human race, up through a fanciful utopia in which comics is accorded the status of not simply Art (as we all know it Should Be) but Life Itself.
What text there is in the comic proper is included in English (visibly pasted down onto the artwork) and again in added French and Swedish captions which, while they do break up the panel compositions a bit, usually add more than they (necessarily) obscure.

It was always my assumption that there were many-many individuals in the "race" of the Asgardians and that some (though far from all) were worshipped as gods/goddesses while the rest had no interest in such hassles and simply lived their lives without ever interacting with "mortals".
During the Asgardian Wars (when the New Mutants went to Asgard) some of the Warriors Three commented upon seeing Sunspot (a Brazilian male of African descent) that people of that flesh tone were not common in Asgard, but, as noted, we have seen a few.
He also was established in a "Tales of Asgard" as a member of a rival tribe that came into conflict with the Asgardians (possibly the same story as the H-guy, but I don't recall).

This is far from the first time we've seen such themes touched on in comics -- DC's Superman titles have explored similar ideas, as have the writers on The Authority, for example.
