Asgeir Mickelson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)

As an update to previous reports, drummer Asgeir Mickelson (BORKNAGAR, SPIRAL ARCHITECT) has denied the rumors that he will be the session drummer for DIMMU BORGIR's upcoming live appearances.
Their drumming is excellent and especially Nick's work is demanding, so I would probably need a couple of months to get in shape for such an extreme style of playing (especially since I've hardly played drums at all since I did the VINTERSORG album last summer).
Killerich, widely considered to be one of the most skilled speed/grind drummers around, won the title "fastest feet in the world" with more than 800 hits on the pedals in one minute at the NAMM music convention in the U.S., according to published reports.

As a footnote, it was worth a mention that Steinar and Asgeir played in progressive act Spiral Architect together with bass player/co-singer Maztema [actually Øyvind Hægeland].
In the sleeve notes, Asgeir Mickelson is solely credited as a studio drummer, and Lunaris has already employed another drummer in the shape of the unknown Italian Janos di Croce, but M offers a plausible explanation for this as well.
Asgeir was only a full time member for a few months in 1999.

 VINTERSORG - In-Depth
It soon became clear, after the pre-production work in their small studio Seven Stars, that a drummer capable of handling the technical and creative aspects of the new material would be needed.
Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect, Borknagar), with whom Vintersorg already had a working relationship through Borknagar, joined the recording efforts.
The album was made possible by the brilliant contributions of guest musicians Asgeir Mickelson (drums), Steve Di Giorgio (bass), Nils Johansson (analogue synth, loop editing, hammond on track 4), and Lars Nedland (hammond on track 3).

Vintersorg: I would say consciously it hasn’t really done that because I write all the songs at home with pre-production and programming and we present the songs to the other guys then they take their vision and filter it out through their minds.
I think when he (Asgeir) and Steve (Digiorio, bass) joined for the album before (Visions From the Spiral Generator), the album became more progressive than I thought it would be.
When those guys are in doing their stuff, there is always going to be a lot of abstract elements and I wouldn’t say those guys are ‘show-offs’, but they are musical wizards in a way.

Although, when the band -- Øysten G Brun, guitars; Lars A Nedland, synthesizers; Asgeir Mickelson, drums; Jens F Ryland, guitar; and Tyr on bass — and Vintersorg play/sing "clean," it becomes something that will appeal to progressive metal fans.
One point where they do hit the mark (and there is more than one) is "Soul Sphere" which brings to mind Pain Of Salvation, as here Vintersorg sings in soaring, plaintive tones (terms which might seem at odds), while the rest of the band plays melodically behind him.
Not that I don't think Mickelson's a good drummer, he demonstrates he is on other parts of the album.

Asgeir Mickelson also shines, proving himself to be even more of an omnimusician on "Epic," this time covering bass as well as drums.
With every other Borknagar album, a new group of people came together to interpret Øystein Brun's vision of "the yearning moods that entertain fantasy, and call revelations in our minds concerning the ancient past," as was set forth in the band's eponymous debut.
This time, with Brun striving to cover both guitars, and Mickelson recording bass, it's almost as if it was hard enough to get this album recorded and released on time, let alone offer a new interpretation of any sort.

Their first, self titled album is a fl metal album with Norwegian lyrics, but all the later albums have been sung in English and with the change of language the music has also evolved.
