  A reformist attacked
ASGHAR ALI ENGINEER, reformist and civil liberties activist, was attacked in Mumbai on February 13 allegedly by members of his own Dawoodi Bohra community for "insulting and attempting to attack" the Syedna, the head priest of the community, Dr. Moha mmed Burhanuddin.
Engineer said that while one of them was a co-passenger on the All iance Air flight, the others were from among a group of people who had come to receive the Syedna.
Engineer refuted the accusation that he tried to attack, or even insult, the Syedna, saying that it was the pro-Syedna group that first verbally and then physically attacked him.

Asghar Ali Engineer was born in Bohra priestly family (amil's family) on 10th March, 1939 in Salumbar, Rajasthan (near Udaipur) where Sheikh Qurban Husain, his father, was an amil at that time.

Asghar Ali Engineer was born in 1940, and took a BSc.

Asghar Ali Engineer, one of the most courageous and enlightened commentators on communal affairs in the country today, was returning from Bhopal to Mumbai via Indore.

If religious leaders were mere interpreters of their respective religions as Engineer deceivably prophesies, then Prophet Muhammad and Asghar Engineer are of the same caliber.
In fact Engineer could be a step ahead of the founder of Islam as he asserted during the release of his controversial book Rethinking Issues in Islam that "the purpose of the book was to reinterpret the Quranic teachings." Isn't it the same scriptures Engineer is 'rethinking' and 'reinterpreting' that was revealed upon the Prophet!
In fact, Asghar Ali Engineer filed for a judicial review (Writ Petition No. 740 of 1986) defying his excommunication from the Daudi Bohra community on the grounds of human rights violation.

Consequently, polygamy is still legal for Muslims only, as is the practice whereby Muslim men can divorce their wives saying simply ("I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you"), and not be required to give any alimony or further support whatsoever.
Asghar Ali Engineer argues that the practice is wrong, and should be made illegal in India; I agree.

Engineer is a pretty common last name in North India and Pakistan.
The Dr's family presumably had a Engineer in the family at some point, and so that particular name was adopted.
Whilst I am puzzled by the fixation with Ali's name, I would say the article is well written, and allot of Ali's ideas are expanded upon to this readers appreciation.

 CONCEPT OF IJTIHAD
When nothing was found in the holy Qur'an and the Prophet's Sunnah Hazrat Ali's suggestion that eighty lashes be given as a punishment for drinking was accepted on the grounds that after drinking a person tends to make false accusation and the punishment for false accusation in the Qur'an was eighty lashes.
It was necessary to take their criticism seriously and apply ones' knowledge and intellectual faculties in creatively responding to the criticism.
Similarly Maulavi Cheragh Ali wrote books on slavery, jihad, personal law etc. His book A Critical Exposition of the Popular Jihad is an important work in this genre.
