		It sounds like your friend Yusuf may be Pakistani shiah, the jafari/12 imam shiah also call their madhab “ithnari ashari” and may pretend to be hanafi using taqiyyah (it is allowed in their madhab) if they are concerned they may be persecuted.
		I would reckon if he can talk about Derrida there is a very high chance he is Shiah, philosophy and education are extremely important to them, and the Shiah are the only muslims in the world today who came out of the “colonial era” with their educational systems intact.
