Gottsching has been the band's mainstay through the years and in the 70's it was his guitar that added a unique quality that made Ash Ra Tempel both part of, yet not limited to, the same electronic genre that bands like Tangerine Dream influenced.
Seven Up has some of Ash Ra's rawest bluesy 'rockin' at the Fillmore psych', but also has an extended piece consisting of Gottsching's psych guitar, electronic freakouts, and trippy voices.
Heavy jam rock á la Cream, the tune also incorporates healthy doses of Ash Ra spaciness and electronics, and Gottsching's guitar goes to the edge of the universe while the bass and drums keep the most basic of jam rock beats.

Manuel Göttsching also started a solo career parallel to the band in 1974 with one of the pioneer loop albums called "Inventions for Guitar", and he has also worked with COSMIC JOKERS and Walter Wegmüller.
Ash Ra Tempel picked the 60's psychodelic culture and drove it into the 70's Space Rock and electronic music, and pioneered the Experimental German scene.

Ash Ra Tempel - Friendship - Groove Unlimited
The German group Ash Ra Tempel has existed, in one form or another, since 1970.
At the core of this unit is Manuel Gottsching, leading Ash Ra Tempel from its roots in spacerock, to cosmicmusic, on to a precursor of techno and more recently to a reunion with co-founder Klaus Schulze.
On the Ash Ra Tempel studio album: "Friendship", Gottsching's guitar melodies and Schulze's synths and percussion are together again with an easy going musical jaunt between two comrades now on the same path.

With Ash Ra Tempel he even came to collaborate in a joint album called Seven Up, signed by the band and the writer, that served as a vehicle for Leary's ideas.
The circumstances in which the session that led to the recording of the album was developed were somewhat atypical.
The members of ART and other collaborating musicians travelled to Switzerland, the nearest place to Germany where Leary could then be.

Ash Ra Tempel: Ash Ra Tempel (1971) Music Reviews - Germany - Hippyland
Ash Ra Tempel, as well as Can, Faust, Neu, Amon Düül II, Tangerine Dream, and Kraftwerk, were regarded as the greats in the Krautrock scene.
A young guitarist named Manuel Göttsching was starting a new band called Ash Ra Tempel, and the two members he got in were bassist Hartmut Enke and Klaus Schulze.
Other members that came in and out of Ash Ra Tempel included Rosi Müller, Steve Schroyder (ex-Tangerine Dream), and even Timothy Leary (who was apparently in exile in neighboring Switzerland around that time), of all people.

The reissue of historic, early albums of Germany's legendary space/psych outfit is a legitimately great thing, and the network of people who continue to discover this stuff seems to expand daily with no let up.
The first, self-titled, Ash Ra Tempel album, from 1971, is a flat-out massive overdriven psych monster.
Formed by Klaus Schulze (on drums & electronics, after having left Tangerine Dream), guitarist Manuel Gottsching (who would remain the one constant with Ash Ra), and Hartmut Enke (bass), this is the most intense recording in their discography & an absolute must if you're interested in the early glories of Krautrock bliss.

I realize that Join Inn is not the best way to be introduced to the wonders of the Kosmische Rock of Germany's second-trippiest band (the first one, of course, was Tangerine Dream), but unfortunately this is the way I was introduced to their music, and we'll just have to deal with it.
While this is a regular Ash Ra Tempel release, it's a little odd because most of the music on here was recorded after Manuel Goettsching and Hartmut Enke spent an entire day working on a side project with lots of other musicians.

Ash Ra Tempel & Timothy Leary: Seven Up (1973) Music Reviews - Germany - Hippyland
Seven Up, Ash Ra Tempel's third album is often very misunderstood by fans of their music.
It's a real odd one to say the least, and if you're familiar with such albums as their 1971 debut, Join Inn (1973), or Inventions For Electric Guitar (1975, actually a Manuel Göttsching solo album) this one is quite a shock indeed.
The last movement of "Time" is "She" which is basically a re-recording of "Suche & Liebe" off Ash Ra Tempel's 1972 album Schwingungen.

Ash Ra Tempel : Ash Ra Tempel - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
In light of the 1990s post-rock scene and the often clear links back to Krautrock of all stripes, Ash Ra Tempel's monster debut album stands as being both astonishingly prescient and just flat out good, a logical extension of the space-jam-freakout ethos into rarified realms.
Featuring the original trio of Enke, Gottsching and Schulze, Ash Ra Tempel consists of only two side-long tracks, both of which are gripping examples of technical ability mixed with rock power.
If more progressive music was like it, there wouldn't be as many continuing complaints about that genre as a whole.

ASH RA TEMPEL Ash Ra Tempel review
— Simply one of the all-time great Krautrock albums, this is the original ASH RA TEMPEL lineup with Manuel Göttsching, Hartmut Enke, and Klaus Schulze (who just left TANGERINE DREAM following the release of "Electronic Meditation").
This is truly one of the first ASH RA TEMPEL albums you should try, especially because there are no vocals (except for some wordless vocals on "Traummachine" which are rather pleasant).
The original LP on Ohr comes with a fold-out cover, sorta similar to ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery" (but without the diecut), or that obscure late '60s Portland, Oregon act called Touch (the band that recorded for the Coliseum label, that is, as opposed to too many other bands with that name).
