Is Gibson film anti-Jewish? Ministers give it thumbs up
Gibson's film isn't scheduled to be released until Feb. 25 -- Ash Wednesday -- but it's been making waves and headlines for a year after several Jewish leaders saw an early version of the script and criticized the film as anti-Semitic for allegedly placing the blame for Christ's death on the Jews.
The Willow Creek screening of an unfinished cut of the film and another screening Jan. 5 at a mega-church in California were its first large-scale venues.
Kuiper and other pastors who saw the film said violence in scenes depicting the beating and crucifixion of Jesus was brutally graphic.

A Hard 'Days' Night - Entertainment
Although Lent is actually 47 days and 47 nights, beginning Ash Wednesday and ending Easter Sunday, we shouldn't hold this kind of discrepancy against a film as enjoyable as this one.
Instead, 40 Days and 40 Nights turns out to be a film that doesn't rely on one joke or even retread over gags used in previous "sex comedies." Scenes including a fantastic flight across a terrain of naked, bouncing breasts and strange confessions in a confessional give the movie an original edge.
The backbone of the film is not its comedy, but a set of great performances.

 40 Days and 40 Nights - PittsburghLIVE.com
The film has a one-joke premise, that a young man "vows" (a misused word in context) to abstain from all sexual activity for the 40 days and 40 nights of Lent - that is, the period beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding implicitly on Easter.
It is not a religious film, either, although it is at its most offensive in its extremely superficial allusions to Lent, to spiritually motivated practices and to the depiction of clerical life and family values.
Enduring "40 Days and 40 Nights" to the end may be the biggest Lenten sacrifice of all.

I saw the film on Ash Wednesday with the student body of The High School of St. Thomas More in Champaign.
Seeing this film in the same cineplex showing "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" or promoting "Starsky & Hutch" makes one realize how far the glitz of Hollywood can be from the Gospel core.
While the movie and television focus on the Gospel is at once encouraging and curious, there's no better way to draw close to Christ this Lenten season than frequent Mass attendance and the traditional practices of prayer, fasting and charitable giving.

The announced Ash Wednesday release of Mel Gibson’s film, “The Passion of Christ,” will give an extra boost during Lent to this story fraught with memory and meaning for both Jews and Christians.
Lent is about Passion – Jesus’ Passion, and the passion of Christians for their suffering Lord.
It has also been about the suffering of Jewish communities that were targeted for revenge after the Passion story had been told in traditional anti-Jewish form.

 Passion Play
Although not scheduled to be released to theaters until Ash Wednesday, "The Passion" generated this spring more discussion than any film in recent memory: endless op-eds, press releases, debates, and denunciations--all about a movie, in Aramaic and Latin, that none of the commentators had seen.
There are, in a sense, only five historical accounts of the Passion: in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and, in bare but vivid outline, in the letters of St. Paul.
Perhaps in response to all this publicity, both negative and positive, Gibson released a trailer for "The Passion" on July 14.

But there's a closely related dimension of Gibson's film that has so far received less attention, and which is at least as compelling: The movie is also a revival of medieval theatrical sadism.
