Berkshire History: Ashampstead Parish Church   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The church at Ashampstead was built in the late 12th century as a chapel of Basildon.
Berkshire is not best known for a proliferation of medieval wall paintings in its churches, yet Ashampstead Church has some of the finest in the country.
They have been treated to ensure their future preservation in the 20s, the 50s and, most recently, in 1990.

The Steamers lost 3-2 to Ashampstead this morning despite having the majority of the play and the greater number of chances on goal.
Nick Smith broke the deadlock midway through the first half from the penalty spot after Chris Taylor was scythed down in the area, chasing a through ball from Seb Rivers.
Steve Bell, now playing for the third division outfit, flicked the ball on to the Ashampstead striker to calmly slot the ball past the advancing Jensen, (who I believe was making his goalkeeping debut for the Steamers).

 The Annunciation/The Visitation, Ashampstead, Berkshire
Stylistically, the blend of ‘naturalistic’ and ceremonial presentation of the subject is one often found in English paintings of the Visitation.
As with all the 13th century work at Ashampstead, the quality of the paintings is high, and there are suggestions about possible reasons for this on the page dealing with the Nativity sequence.
It is a pity that the Annunciation is so badly damaged, because I suspect that it might originally have been the most accomplished painting of all.

Steve Bell played a lovely through ball to the unmarked Chris Taylor who ran into the area before selling the keeper a dummy and crossing for Seb to tuck the ball away from a couple of yards out.
