Topic: Ashcan copy

Ashcan copy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ashcan copy is a term that originated in the golden age of comic book publishing, meant to describe is a publication produced solely for legal purposes (such as copyright), which was not normally intended for distribution.
This particular example of ashcan publishing was in vain, as a competitor had already beat Fawcett to publishing a "Flash Comics".
In modern comics, ashcans may be used as a promotion or as an inexpensive format for independent self-publishing.

In the digital age of music, music may be copied and distributed for a minimal cost through the Internet, however the record industry attempts to provide the service of promoting and marketing the artist so that the work can reach a much larger audience.
This is also called a compulsory license, because under this scheme, anyone who wishes to copy a covered work does not need the permission of the copyright holder, but instead merely files the proper notice and pays a set fee established by statute (or by agency decision under statutory guidance) for every copy made.
