At the time the miners were much praised by the Tories but now all the pits have been closed and there is considerable bitterness, which may be one explanation for Labour's increased majority in 1992.
The constituency lies to the north west of Nottingham, its main towns being Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirby-in-Ashfield and Eastwood (where D H Lawrence was born and set many of his novels).
As a result of coal's decline the constituency's social character is changing.

The area was aligned with the Union of Democratic Mineworkers during the 1980s miners’ strike, and became more marginal during the mid-80s (it had briefly been held by the Conservatives after a 1977 by-election), but after the closure of the mines it became a safe Labour seat.
Ashfield council was totally dominated by Labour until 2004 when a strong independent group took almost half the seats.
Because of this, Ashfield is still the kind of seat where you could stand a donkey as the Labour candidate and it would win.

Veritas's North of England chairman Judith Longman, a former UKIP Yorkshire regional chairman, told the Yorkshire Post that several UKIP branches were already in the process of switching sides and claimed UKIP membership from the Pennines to the North Sea coast would be left "in tatters" as more Veritas branches are founded.

Junctions 27 and 28 of the M1 are on the eastern edge of the Constituency - then just follow the signs to Mansfield (it's that sort of a place!) Peace be with you.

I’m sure someone will be along in the morning who can calculate swing properly, but my calculation from the results last time, where Labour had 45% of the vote and a majority of 981, it’s a swing to the Lib Dems of over 50%.
Co-incidentally, the Ashfield constituency selection advertisement should be turning up in Lib Dem News any time now.
The Conservatives have nothing to write home about, either, bearing in mind they won the Ashfield Parliamentary Byelection in 1977 (the same night Austin Mitchell took Grimsby).
