Ashford’s importance as a growing agricultural and market town was confirmed in 1243 when it was incorporated, and by the end of the 16th century it had risen to become an important market town, primarily for livestock.
Simone Weil, the French philosopher, died in Grosvenor Sanatorium, Ashford, in 1943, and is buried in the town's Bybrook Cemetery.

We don't live in Ashford so I can't advice you but a good place to start some research is www.upmystreet.com.
But but but there are some truly fabulous villages to live in around Ashford - houses are half the price of what you would pay for the equivalent in the home counties.
Bear in mind that Ashford is "spreading" outwards, so somewhere 4/5 miles outside of the town now might end up "merging" with it through building/expansion.
