Ashford in the Water is a very pretty Derbyshire and Peak District village, situated on the River Wye, one and a half miles north west of Bakewell.
The custom had fallen into disuse in Ashford until about 40 years ago, when thanks to a lady called Ida Thorpe, it was revived.The high standards were set by her are continued to this day as the hoardes of visitors pouring into Ashford around Trinity Sunday bear witness.

The reunion came about as a result of the dying wishes of John Michael Tomlinson who became an expert on the subject after discovering in 1945 that his family were inlayers from Ashford-in-the-Water.

After a steep climb up to Shacklow Wood the path gradually descends to join the riverbank by a former water mill and joins the Sheldon road close to the site of what used to be Ashford Marble Works, before returning along the A6 to Ashford.
In about 50 yards cross a stile on the left and follow the winding path to another waymarker taking the route signed ‘Ashford and Sheldon’ leading up the hillside to the left.
The bridge is no longer open to traffic and is a favourite spot where visitors can either feed the ducks, or gaze down into the clear waters to see if they can spot a rainbow trout.
