		Ashigara (足柄) was a Myoko class heavy cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
		Ashigara was laid down at the Kawasaki shipyard in Kobe on April 11, 1924, launched on April 22, 1928, and was commissioned into the Imperial Navy on August 20, 1929.
		In the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 24, 1944, Ashigara, with Captain Hayao Miura in command, was assigned to Vice Admiral Kiyohide Shima's force along with Nachi and eight destroyers.

	Royal Navy: History
		The Ashigara was about 2 miles away when the torpedoes were fired and this was the limit of their range.
		The Ashigara had been built with a triple hull and the Japanese were confident that this gave her the greatest possible protection against torpedo attack.
		The Ashigara was the last major warship to be sunk by a British submarine until the Argentine cruiser ‘General Belgrano’ was sunk by HM/SM Conquerer during the Falklands Campaign in 1982.

	Kintaro
		Alternatively, Kintaro's real mother left the child in the wilds or died and left him an orphan, and he was raised by the mountain witch Yama-uba (one tale says Kintaro's mother raised him in the wilds, but due to her haggard appearance, she came to be called Yama-uba).
		In the most fanciful version of the tale, Yama-uba was Kintaro's mother, impregnated by a clap of thunder sent from a red dragon of Mt. Ashigara.
		The legends agree that even as a toddler, Kintaro was active and indefatigable, plump and ruddy, wearing only a bib with the Chinese character for "gold" on it.

	Odawara
		During the Nara period, Kanto warriors were sent to the west coast of Kyushu to protect against a possible attack from the continent, and many poems of these men and their wives were recorded in a document called the Manyoshu.
		Ashigara appeared frequently in these poems, with rememberances of the land they left, and images of last sights of loved ones as they entered the Ashigara Pass.
		Another thing which Ashigara Pass and the Odawara area were famous for in early Japanese history was the banditry of a group of men called the "horse borrowers".

		We analyzed the strong motion array data obtained at Ashigara valley from two earthquakes(M5.3 and M4.5) of intermediate distances, focusing on the later arrivals in frequency range between 0.2 and 0.5 Hz.
		Two significant later arrivals were found in wave forms at sediment sites in southern part of the valley.
		The later arrivals may be basin-induced surface waves(Rayleigh and Love waves) generated by oblique underground structure in central part of Ashigara valley.
