Ashima - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Hebrew Bible, Ashima is one of several deities protecting the individual cities of Samaria who are mentioned specifically by name in 2 Kings 17:30.
Ashima was a West Semitic goddess of fate related to the Akkadian goddess Shimti ("fate"), who was a goddess in her own right but also a title of other goddesses such as Damkina and Ishtar.
As such Ashima is cognate with the South Semitic goddess Manathu (or Manat) whose name meant "the measurer, fate, or portion" who was worshipped by the Nabataean peoples of Jordan and other early South Semitic and Arabian peoples.

 Ashima
"The most widely accepted interpretation of the word Ashima is that it is an Aram [region of Syria] form meaning 'the Name.' As such it would likely refer to one or more of the NW Semitic goddesses Anat, Astarte, or Asherah.
Liora also notes that this word, Shema, is derived from the Hebrew Hashem ("the Name") and is pronounced differently than Ashima ("Asheema"), the name of the Hamath Goddess.
This calls into question the widespread interpretation that Ashima means "the Name." It is more likely that Ashima was the actual proper name of the goddess and later became associated with similarly sounding Hebrew words.

The name Ashima is not duplicated precisely elsewhere, but the form appearing in the Bible may itself be a distortion.
Others hold that Ashima and Ashm/Eshm are not divine names but forms of shm, an Aramaic form of the common Semitic word shem ("name") and that Seimios is another form (in Greek transliteration) of the same word.

Others have considered the name to be a form of Ashmun (or Eshmun), the Phenician god; while still others have connected it with the name of the Babylonian goddess, Tashmitu, consort of Nabu, the god of learning.
Kittel ("Die Bücher der Könige," 1900), following Baudissin, holds that Ashima was an Aramaic deity, probably connected in name with the river Ashmaya, near Tyre.
A curious confusion has been made by some of the later commentators—even by Abraham ibn Ezra—who mistake the idol Ashima for the Samaritan appellation for God, Ashima meaning "the Name"; just as the Jews are accustomed to speak of the Deity as "ha-Shem" (Reifmann, in Gurland's "Ginze Yisrael," 74).
