Ashmore Reef is the larger of the three and is separated from Cartier Island by 67 km of open ocean and from Hibernia Reef by 42 km.
Ashmore Reef is a large platform reef consisting of an atoll-like structure with three low, vegetated islands, numerous banks of shifting sand and two large lagoon areas.
Further to the southwest lie the Scott and Seringapatam Reefs and the reefs of the Rowley Shoals.

The Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands are two groups of small low-lying uninhabited tropical islands in the Indian Ocean situated on the edge of the continental shelf north-west of Australia and south of the Indonesian island of Roti at 12°14′ S 123°5′ E.
It is of significant biodiversity value as it is in the flow of the Indonesian throughflow current from the Pacific Ocean through the Indonesian Archipelago to the Indian Ocean.
As Ashmore Reef is the closest point of Australian territory to Indonesia, it has been a popular target for people smugglers to take asylum seekers to Australia.

In 1803 Flinders was informed at Kupang (Timor) that the natives of Macassar (Sulawesi) were accustomed to fish for trepang or beche-de-mer amongst islands in the vicinity of Java and upon a dry shoal lying to the south of Roti (presumably Ashmore Reef) (Flinders, 1814).
In November 1974 the traditional fishing practices of Indonesians at Ashmore Reef, and at Cartier Island, Scott Reef, Seringapatam Reef and Browse Island were recognised under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Governments of Australia and Indonesia (Appendix 1).
The closure was necessary to ensure that the significant seabird breeding rookeries on the islands and the marine wildlife of the reef and lagoons were not disturbed.

The main reef is long and covered at high tide, plus there is a small sandy island with a small structure.
We contacted the 'caretaker' at Ashmore Reef who was very helpful until he asked if we were a charter boat.
Apparently as a private vessel we could snorkel and land on the main island with very few restrictions, but as a charter vessel we were not permitted to do anything without a permit from ANCA obtained from Darwin (or possibly Broome) for a fee of $2000 per vessel.

The policy that Labor put out early this year said that it would very strongly try to prosecute all people smugglers, that was Labor trying to get the upper hand on this issue and say that it wouldn't be weak on people smuggling.

Arrived Ashmore Reef in the morning and visited middle island and west island during the day
The annual birding trip to Ashmore Reef run by Kimberley Birdwatching Tours was particularly successful this year with no less than four BARC (Birds Australia Rarities Committee) rarities found on the island, including a first for Australia, as well as the full suite of northwest Australian seabird specialities.
A total of 70 species, including 32 species of seabird were also recorded over 374 Nm of transect in 61 hours (366 person hours) of observation during the five days sailing to and from Ashmore Reef.
