Leyland Motors has a long history dating from 1896, when the Sumner and Spurrier families founded the Lancashire Steam Motor Company in the town of Leyland in North West England.
Leyland Trucks now operates as a division of PACCAR from the Leyland Assembly Plant in North West England manufacturing around 14,000 trucks per year of which about a third are sold in the EU.
Historically, Leyland Motors was a major manufacturer of buses used in the United Kingdom and world-wide, being probably most famous for the trend-setting Atlantean rear-engined double decker design produced between 1956 and 1986.

Ashok Leyland Ltd, India's No 2 bus and truck maker, is poised to form a joint venture with a Chinese firm to make pickups to meet growing domestic demand for light commercial vehicles, an executive said on Friday.
Leyland is spending Rs 4 billion ($88.4 million) to raise capacity to 100,000 vehicles a year by March 2008 from 67,000 now and to build a new line of engines and gear boxes.
Leyland, which aims to sell 70,000 units in the year to March, is focusing on exports to help balance cyclical downturns, looking to increase export earnings to 15 per cent of the total in the coming years from 12 per cent now, he said.

The Hinduja Group flagship firm Ashok Leyland is planning to set up a multi-million dollar plant in Iran for assembling CNG trucks and buses.
The Iranian venture would be similar to Ashok Leyland's Sri Lankan foray where it has set up an assembling factory at Panagoda, about 40 km from Colombo, for manufacturing 15,000 trucks and buses per year.
While Ashok Leyland manufactures CNG buses for Delhi, CNG trucks for Tehran would be the first such venture.

Ashok Leyland Ltd, India's second largest commercial vehicles manufacturer, has announced a voluntary retirement scheme at its Ennore facility, which employs around 6,300 out of the total employee strength of 13000-odd in the company.
Confirming the development, J N Amrolia, executive director, Ashok Leyland, said: "The scheme, which was offered to employees at Ennore facility last Saturday will remain open for two weeks.
It may be mentioned that Ashok Leyland announced a voluntary retirement scheme in June 2000 and around 200 employees opted for it.
