Civil War: Sullivan Ballou and the Ashokan Farewell
In concert, the Ashokan Farewell is sometimes introduced by the composer as: "a Scottish lament written by a Jewish guy from the Bronx." This gentle fiddle tune, however, has come to symbolise the collective heart and soul of a people torn apart by strife during the American Civil War.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Sullivan Ballou (1827-1861) had a promising career as a lawyer and was a devoted father and husband to his boys Edgar and Willie and to his wife, Sarah.
Ashokan Farewell remains the only piece of contemporary music to be featured in the eleven hour series The Civil War by Ken Burns.

I finally broke down and downloaded three different versions of Ashokan Farewell from the iTunes Music Store this morning, and I can't stop listening to them.
Of the two Jay Ungar versions, I prefer the version on Songs of the Civil War, the soundtrack to the 11-hour miniseries from the 80s of which this was the main theme.
Ashokan Farewell has been coming up over and over again in my life this past year, mostly at Bluegrass jams.

 Ashokan Farewell
"Ashokan Farewell" (made famous by the Ken Burn's Civil War Public TV series) may not be a Civil War original, but the Ashokan area of the Catskill Mountains has a long a fascinating history, and includes some of the most beautiful land anywhere.
The area derives an added aura of mystery from the fact that eight local villages were inundated upon the creation of the Ashokan Reservoir in 1914.
A sensational aspect of this event was the removal from thirty-two cemeteries of two thousand eight hundred bodies or skeletons, including those of many soldiers of the Revolution, and their reinterment in new pine boxes in neighboring graveyards.
