Choudhary was born in the Pakistani half of the Punjab region.
In July 2005 Choudhary was in hot spot again when he refused to condemn outright the practice of stoning people for homosexual and extra-marital sexual behaviour.

Here is the problem in a nutshell: Choudhary is not alone in that what he holds as morally right and wrong comes solely from a religious text and does not waver from dogma even when it defies logic, rationality, and sense.
Choudhary hasn't done that, which makes him a damn sight better than many of the so called "religious right" here.
And if Choudhary is ashamed of what he said, he was probably ashamed of it long before he said it, or he will never have any sympathy for what he said.

Ashraf Choudhary thinks its OK to stone gays and adulterers - but only overseas, not here.
He was perfectly capable of refusing to answer that question, or drawing a clear distinction between an interpretation of the Koran (one that is highly contentious, by the way) and his beliefs.
My point was that you wouldn't see this stuff from say Bill English, because in the normal course of events he wouldn't be asked, and neither would any other MP who happened to be Christian, unless Christianity was their election platform ie they were standing for Destiny.

Having now seen the part of the 60 Minutes interview that got Labour's Muslim MP Ashraf Choudhary into trouble this week, I have to sympathise with him.
Eventually, Choudhary supplanted his original, unfortunate answer - yes, but not in New Zealand, of course - with a statement reiterating that the Koran was not incorrect, but that he personally abhorred the practice of stoning.
Choudhary seems to lack the wit for political life, but I do not for a moment believe he thinks homosexuals should be stoned to death - he voted for the Civil Union Bill, for goodness sake - and we would do well to look at what our own Good Book recommends.
