Last check: 2007-10-05) LOS ANGELES--Kim Gardner, a rock 'n' roll bassist who found early fame in the "British Invasion" band The Birds and later blossomed musically as part of the group Ashton, Gardner and Dyke, died here Oct. 24, 2001, of cancer. Gardner and Wood then joined the mod band Creation, a band little known outside of the U.K. but which, within Britain, was seen as a competitor to the likes of The Who and The Kinks. Ashton, Gardner And Dyke emerged from the remnants of Liverpool group The Remo Four when their organist/vocalist Tony Ashton and drummer Roy Dyke teamed up with bassist Kim Gardner in early 1969. Their eponymous debut album was patchy, but adding a three piece brass section they relaunched themselves with 1970's "The Worst Of Ashton, Gardner and Dyke" and the accompanying 1971 single "Resurrection Shuffle", which reached no. 3 in the British charts, and brought them a legion of screaming fans and bookings on Top Of The Pops. Ashton Gardner and Dyke (who had only finished their second album in July) were used for the rock tracks, and also provided the rock backing on the other numbers, which were augmented with orchestral string work by the 'Royal Liverpool Symphony Orchestra' (made up orchesta!).
