 Local History
Ashton-in-Makerfield, or in the Willows, as it was variously called, was the largest and most populous of the townships in the ancient Parish of Winwick, and would originally have been included in the Diocese of York.
About the beginning of the tenth century, the land between the Ribble and the Mersey was transferred to the Diocese of Lichfield then in 1541 to the new Diocese of Chester.
It was enacted that the Parish and Rectory of Ashton-in-Makerfield should comprise the whole of the township of Ashton-in-Makerfield "except that part which is called the Town End", and that the Town End, together with the whole of the township of Haydock should form the Parish and Vicarage of St Thomas.

It was established in 1999 to report the work of the Ashton Town Centre Group and later its successor, the Ashton Community Forum, a non-political community association established to bring local residents together in the interests of the town.
The website is maintained both as a history of those organisations based on the official records lodged in Wigan Borough archives, and also to incorporate news of events and activities continued in the spirit of the original Ashton Community Forum.
The foundations of the Ashton Community Forum as a community association were created in January 1997 when members of Ashton and Golborne Labour Party Branch decided to create a non-political forum to work on issues to improve Ashton town centre and surrounds.
