 Quebec Fiord a Natural Marvel
The Saguenay River runs through one of the continent's great geological wonders, a 100-kilometre-long, glacier-ripped gash in Quebec's landscape northeast of Quebec City.
The river runs deep, to 270 metres, before rising to a scant 25 metres at the fiord's mouth beside the town of Tadoussac.
In a fascinating bit of water dynamics, the relatively warm, fresh waters of the Saguenay River lie atop the frigid saltwater of the St. Lawrence inside the fiord.

Runoff is that part of precipitation that flows toward the rivers or streams on the ground surface or within the soil (subsurface runoff or interflow).

 Echoes from the Past
Since the rivers in the Saguenay-Lake-Saint-Jean system converge towards Lake Saint-Jean, this body of water is like a crossroads in the heart of a vast communication network of rivers.
Hunting intensified to the point that animal populations were exhausted, while at the same time the Ilnus of the Saguenay region became increasingly dependent for their survival on European goods, distributed through the posts and missions that were established in the region.
Posts built on the Chicoutimi, Ashuapmushuan and Metabetchouan (1676-1880) rivers testify to the growth of the fur trade in the area in the 17th and 18th centuries.

GIS/EM4 - Modeling submerged macrophytes in fluvial environment using 2D physical habitat simulation
In the context of global climatic changes and discharge regulation, it is imperative to understand and quantify the impact of water level fluctuations on the distribution and biomass of submerged plants.
However, field data suggest that within the Saint-Lawrence River and particularly in Lake Saint-François (Morin and Leclerc 2000), abiotic factors control macrophyte habitat and determine a large portion of their spatial distribution and biomass.
Bidimensional models developed for river and coastal hydraulics calculate the abiotic factors with sufficient precision at all points of the area modeled, even under transitory conditions.
