It's called "A Land Conservation Plan for the Ashuelot River Watershed" and was produced by a partnership of The Nature Conservancy, Monadnock Conservancy, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Southwest Region Planning Commission.
The primary purposes of the Ashuelot River Watershed Land Conservation Plan are to provide a blueprint for conservation action, and to develop a greater understanding among land trusts and other entities for how to engage, individually and collectively, in land conservation.
In all, the plan identifies 13 terrestrial areas and 20 river and stream reaches that are considered to be of exceptional habitat significance from a watershed perspective.

The Ashuelot river enters the town near its northeast corner, and runs in a general southwesterly direction until it passes the center village, where it curves somewhat abruptly and runs to the west and north, passing out of the town at very near the middle of its western boundary.

The project involved snagging and clearing approximately 22,800 feet of the Ashuelot River, beginning at the railroad bridge in Keene and extending to the covered bridge at Swanzey Station in Swanzey.
Where once the river meandered east-west for a total of 5,600 feet, the two cutoff channels now permit the river to flow in a north-south direction for approximately 1,800 feet.

With the river herring long gone, we are seeing large numbers of big stripers pull out of the river, at least in the tributaries.
This is the highest population estimate we have had for the Eightmile River (post-fishway construction) but it is the lowest population estimate we have had for the Salmon River since 1983.
However, we try to keep track of trends with river herring and the general trend this year was the same as observed on the Connecticut River: a pretty good alewife run and a mostly non-existent blueback herring run.

High levels of mercury were found in fish that live in bodies of water connected to the Ashuelot River, but the stretch of river that runs through Keene and its surrounding areas seems to be free of the chemical.
The Ashuelot River runs 63 miles from Butterfield Pond in Washington, N.H., down to Hinsdale, where it meets the Connecticut River, said Gabe Gries, a biologist at the Fish and Game Department in Keene.
Skuly and the ARLAC, have been monitoring the Ashuelot River's pH, DO, temperature, turbidity, e-coli and phosphorus levels for the last four years, and say the river is in "fine" shape.

Four A. heterodon individuals from the Ashuelot River and five from the Connecticut River in New Hampshire were successfully transported to USGS Northern Appalachian Research (NARL) in Wellsboro, PA. Infections were carried out using naturally-released glochidia collected in the laboratory.
Successfully infected tessellated darters from the Ashuelot River, Connecticut River, Delaware River main stem, and Flat Brook with glochidia from Ashuelot River mussels.
Tessellated darters collected from the Delaware River main stem suffered unusually high mortality during the infection period; this higher-than-expected mortality may have been due to parasite-induced tissue damage observed in the laboratory.

Entitled Ashuelot River Flow, this ceramic mural by Nancy Selvage is not unlike a maze or labyrinth, focusing as it does on the winding, curvilinear nature of moving water.
Measuring some 60 feet long, the piece is, like a river, best appreciated as you walk alongside it, sun glinting through a wall of windows and onto its gently curving contours.
Just as you can't walk the same river twice, the "me" who walked last year's labyrinth (and the "me" who tried photographing Ashuelot River Flow several months ago) isn't the same person as the "me" who meandered under partly cloudy skies yesterday, or who sits typing in the New Hampshire night now.

The property is bordered to the west and southwest by the South Branch (SB) Ashuelot River; to the east by Whitcomb Road; and to the north by Route 32.
Analytical results of a drinking water sample collected in 1994 from the well at Monadnock Regional High School, located across the SB Ashuelot River 0.48 miles west of the property, indicated the presence of copper and lead.
Based on the proximity of nearby drinking water supply wells, and the direction of groundwater flow(into the adjacent SB Ashuelot River), no impacts to nearby groundwater drinking water supply sources are known or suspected.

Pomeroy's Island is located in the Connecticut River approximately 500-600 yards below the mouth of the Ashuelot River in southern New Hampshire, just north of the Massachusetts state line.
It was decided that Nathaniel Pomeroy and some of the men would cross the river to fetch the other canoe which could be seen at an island not far away.
Although Nathaniel was buried on the west bank of the river, his true memorial is the island that has carried his name since 1698.
