People magazine featured the band in 1982 with a positive spin "The group's album ASIA was approaching a million copies sold after barely three months and can be found geographically at the top of the charts".
In 1997, their debut ASIA album was recognised by the Record Industry Association of America with a quadruple platinum award for US sales alone.
From their earliest days in the 1980's the band was hounded mercilessly by the press as a 'flash' in the pan money-making operation, yet their presence on the music scene in 2001 is a glowing testament to the wonderful music they have created.

Asia's second album is essentially more of the same of what you'd come to expect from them on their first album.
The album's stylings are so similar to the debut that they could have been released as a double album at one point, and no one would likely know there was a year in between the recordings of both of them.
Asia's 2nd album, "Alpha" (from 1983), is pretty much more of the same arena rock this supergroup started out with on their smash-hit debut disc from the previous year.

Asia are never going to be a hard rock outfit, but this album is definitely more uptempo and has a stronger rock feel.
Generally speaking, I enjoyed their last album, but for me this is better written and better produced but still finds itself blessed with the same high degree of musical expertise.
Silent Nation is an album very far and away from the anthemic and soaring melodies of the past and from the melancholic and distinct sound it created.

Asia was part of those years and it brings me good memories. As this album is not entirely progressive, it is not essential for extreme progressive fans, but it is a good choice for people who understand neessary changes in music styles to keep music alive.
Asia are a band that seems to inspire outright loathing amongst hardline prog fans for not being as complex or detailed as this supergroup's parent groups of King Crimson, ELP and Yes had delivered on a regular basis.
Indeed, their debut album is one of the very few on these archives that has (as of this writing) double-digit ratings in each of the five star categories.

The album was over-dominated by keyboard sections, whereas the guitar and drum sections lost their thread totally.
Asia is such a group that brings this together into a pop/rock amalgam.
The Asia album has been well covered by other readers and I can only reinforce the message that it is an excellent CD well worth purchasing.

The band also released the ‘Anthology’ album in 98, a greatest hits collection spanning their career to date with re-recordings of their earlier hits from the Wetton Era albums with John Payne vocals.
Entitled /Silent Nation’, the album is a deliberate return to the rock roots from which Asia was born.

The anticipation for a new Asia album is usually eager, especially a new one.
Personally, I was disappointed with their last two albums (plus the thousands of official live/rare albums released in the meantime) and, with the amount of hype they made around this album, I thought that Asia could come up with something better.
Asia have matured into a band free of all the hype of the early years into a band that delivers superb panoramic rock music, textured by Downes' keyboard prowess and John Payne's superb vocal range.

Asia was one of the finest rock groups of the eighties.
How unfair it is that Asia release two decent-but-unspectacular albums (despite some catchy hits) and they both sell millions, and then the band finally make a *great* Asia album with their third release and it bombs.
Oh well....Nonetheless, the guys in Asia should be very proud of their third album, 1985's "Astra." By this time, guitarist Steve Howe had left---he and singer/bassist John Wetton were not getting along---and he was replaced by Mandy Meyer, formerly of the metal band Krokus.

 ASIA and WHITEWING
ASIA was a self-described progressive art rock band from Rapid City, South Dakota, which is on the edge of the beautiful Black Hills, where spiritualism and Indian lore still abound.
Album sales were weak, however, because distribution to the hundreds of small Midwestern towns we typically toured were very poor and difficult to coordinate with airplay.
After considerable album promotion touring and countless radio interviews, ASI chose not to pick up the contract option for our second album (which was fully composed and in demo form) primarily because they were in the midst of a belt-tightening stage after the mid-Seventies recession.

 ASIA | Rockdetector
ASIA is a slick 80's 'supergroup', originally comprising personnel from some of the most esteemed names in British Progressive Rock, that achieved enormous American chart success with their early albums.
ASIA's original and now recognised as classic line-up comprised guitarist STEVE HOWE, keyboardist GEOFF DOWNES, both former members of YES, frontman JOHN WETTON, ex-URIAH HEEP, KING CRIMSON and ROXY MUSIC, and drummer Carl Palmer, who had earned his reputation, naturally, in EMERSON LAKE and PALMER.
Prior to combining to form ASIA, John Wetton was in the final stages of UK, an abortive supergroup with Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio, and involving himself with hid solo album 'Caught In The Crossfire'.

Such was the case with Asia's second album, Alpha, which was released in the summer of 1983 or 1984.
Astra was one of my top choices — as were the other two Asia albums — and it joined U2's War, New Order's Low Life, The Cure's Head on the Door, The Dream Academy, and Planet P Project in heavy rotation in the shop.

This marriage of four players with impressive pedigrees proved to be the success story of 1982 when Asia's debut lodged itself at the top of the U.S. album charts for two months.
The album spawned a massive number four single in "Heat of the Moment," a follow-up Top 20 hit in the sweeping "Only Time Will Tell," and a handful of other tracks that received heavy radio play despite going against the grain of the new wave styling of the day.
Produced by Mike Stone, Asia's strengths were the powerful vocals of John Wetton, the nimble, classically tinged guitar work of Steve Howe, Geoffrey Downes' majestic keyboard playing, and anchoring the band, Carl Palmer's propulsive drumming.
