		It was on such a simple and basic premise as this that Asiaweek was founded in 1975 and on which it based much of the claim it made in its mission statement.
		Little Asiaweek must have seemed a progressively smaller cog in the giant empire, and one that hardly could be called a serious profit centre.
		It would be the exact opposite of the Asiaweek that just died: heavy on commentary, politics and, of course, Asian-owned.

	AsianWeek.com: Business: Asiaweek Magazine Closes
		Asiaweek said the issue released on Nov. 29 would be its last, leaving Asia with just one big regional newsweekly, the Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER), which recently saw its editorial staff merged with the daily Asian Wall Street Journal for a loss of 36 editorial jobs.
		Asiaweek was launched in 1975 and the company had attempted earlier this year to rejuvenate the magazine with a new focus on business news.
		Asiaweek ended with a circulation of 120,000 but was closed along with other Time Inc. magazines that have been hit by hard times in the global advertising industry.

		Copies of Asiaweek with the cover story "Lama Wars" published late last year are said to have been torched.

		In its third annual survey, Asiaweek ranked UNSW eighth - an improvement of two places on 1998 - out of 80 tertiary institutions, in which nine Australian universities are ranked.
		UNSW is the highest ranked Australian university in the poll, with the University of Melbourne ranked tenth, the Australian National University thirteenth, and the University of Queensland nineteenth.
		Vice-Chancellor Professor John Niland said the Asiaweek survey confirmed that UNSW is a pre-eminent university in the region.

		NEW DELHI, May 19: Indian universities were conspicuous by their absence in Asiaweek's survey of the region's best multi-disciplinary institutions, carried in its latest issue.
		But as Asiaweek pointed out, the fact that three Indian IITs, China's Huazhong University of Science & Technology, and Pakistan's Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering figured in it indicates that developing countries can build world-class universities if they put their minds to it.
		The magazine also quoted cynics who maintained that most of these schools were primarily instituted to service the defence requirements of their respective countries.

	Tamil Tigers and America's Founding Fathers - Sachi Sri Kantha
		Well, ten years ago in the Readers Forum pages of the Asiaweek magazine (Hongkong), I enthusiastically took part in a debate with an anonymous correspondent (about whose identity I was not informed; and he could have been an anti-LTTE Tamil or a Sinhalese or a Muslim) on this issue.
		Value judgement or not, in this acrimonious exchange of words, which lasted for nearly 8 months in the Asiaweek magazine, I persisted in putting forth my point of view in approximately 200-words despite heavy odds (especially mangling of submitted text by the editors and the uneasiness of having a debate with an anonymous guy!).
		But as long as the Asiaweek was interested in hearing my view I didn't give up, since I felt that at least I could educate the editors of Asiaweek and some unbiassed readers.

		An excellent account of the Asiaweek debacle by a friend and former senior editor of the magazine can be found here.
		It was mismanagement, from the top to the bottom--I wrote a couple of book reviews for it in the late 1990s and was amazed at the incompetence with which the staff dealt with authors(including losing a signed copy of a book that I lent them for an illustration).
		The failure of FEER (and Asiaweek before it)was as much about commercial realities as it was about the quality of journalism.
