Those of East Asian origin, such as the Chinese or Vietnamese (referred to as Oriental in the UK and the Commonwealth), are usually not included in the term.
When "Asian" is used as a shorthand for "East Asian" or "South Asian", Russians are usually not included; one exception being the Kalmyks, the only Buddhist Asians living in East Europe in the republic of Kalmykia, which is a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
Bobby Jindal, who is of Indian descent, would be categorized as an "Asian or Asian British" by the 2001 UK Census, the 2006 Australian Census as a "Southern and Central Asian" and an "Asian" on the 2000 USA Census.

Lowe argues that "[u]nderstanding Asian immigration to the United States is fundamental to understanding the racialized foundations of both the emergence of the United States as a nation and the development of American capitalism" (ix).
Asian immigrants and Asian Americans have not only been "subject to" immigration exclusion and restriction but have also been "subjects of" the immigration process and are agents of political change, cultural expression, and social transformation.
This is precisely the challenge facing critics of "Asian Canadian literature" at this moment: we must continue to build arguments out of specific local archives while at the same time making the bolder claims needed to address broader questions of exclusion, racialization, and diaspora.

What I think Canada is looking to avoid is the “Eurabia” mess that turned France and the Netherlands into immigration policy disasters, but apparently, have not found a way to phrase it more coherently in the context of an immigration policy statement.
By way of personal example: my fiancee is a chinese born Canadian, but her parents are immigrants from Hong Kong.

Yes, like many other middle class Asians, I had piano lessons as a child, but in no way was I a prodigy on the piano.
So I'm a liberal arts major in a university that isn't in town (most of the Chinese grads from my high school go to university here in town) and is a traditionally more "preppy/white-Felicity/Dawson's Creek" type school (as opposed to the more "hip" HK Chinese who live in Toronto).
It was like that in summer camp (there were a number of Asians at music camp, but they were all in a strings program while I was in musical theater) and in most of my drama classes at university.
