The Asian Cup Winners Cup was started in 1991 as a tournament involving all the domestic cup winners from the affiliated AFC confederations.
During its existence, the cup was regarded as the second most important European club competition out of three; behind the Champions League and ahead of the UEFA Cup.
It was eventually scrapped however, as in many new European countries the domestic cup competition was seen to be of little value compared to the prestigious, old tournaments of Western Europe, such as the FA Cup and the Scottish Cup.

JEDDAH, August 10 (Reuters) - Asian Club Champions Suwon Bluewings came from a goal down on Friday to win 2-1 and lift the Asian Super Cup with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab.
Two minutes into the second half Abdullah Al Wakhad's glancing header saw the Asian Cup Winners' Cup holders increase their advantage, only for Seo to pull his side level less than a minute later.
The World Cup veteran then made it 2-1 in the 56th minute with an effort from 25 yards that left Al Shabab needing to score twice to win.

CNNSI.com - Soccer - Al Hilal beats Shimizu for Asian Super Cup - Tuesday December 12, 2000 12:46 PM
Posted: Tuesday December 12, 2000 12:46 PM RIYADH (Reuters) -- Asian club champion Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia booked a place in next year's Club World Championship when it drew 1-1 with Shimizu S-Pulse of Japan on Tuesday to win the Asian Super Cup 3-2 on aggregate.
The Saudi side joined Japan's Jubilo Iwata in next July's 16-team tournament in Spain after lifting the Super Cup for the second time in three years.
The result means Al Hilal joins 1999 Asian Super Cup winner Jubilo Iwata of Japan in the global club tournament and also emulate bitter rivals Al Nassr, which represented Asia at the inaugural tournament in Brazil earlier this year.
