The "tree - fall light gap" is a particularly rich habitat for Asilidae, and it deserves special attention during the Diptera inventory in Costa Rica.
This habitat occurs where a live tree falls in dense forest, creating a small clearing or light gap (often one tree brings down several other trees or large branches as well).
Placing malaise traps in tree - fall light gaps should be quite productive; place the trap adjacent to the fallen tree (or even on top of it).

 Fossil Diptera Catalog -- Asilidae
Asilidae, commonly known as robber flies, are found worldwide and are comprised of about 5,000 species.
Adults of extant forms are all predaceous on other insects where prey can sometimes be genus- or species-specific.
The fossil record for Asilidae is rather good (57 species in 27 genera) considering that they are most often found in xerophilic habitats, which are not the most suitable for known fossil or amber deposits.

The Asilidae attracted much attention from dipterists and many revisionary projects and ecological studies were undertaken.
Despite this interest a comprehensive understanding of major evolutionary events during the phylogenetic history of the Asilidae are still unknown.
