To walk through Askeaton is to follow where the feet of the humble and the great have trodden for 1,500 years.
Askeaton probably derives its name from the waterfall which is just south of the town on the River Deel.
Askeaton was then granted to the Berkeley family and they held the Castle and the surrounding 12,000 acres for about two hundred years.

ASKEATON, a market and post-town, and a parish (formerly parliamentary borough), in the barony of LOWER CONNELLO EAST, county of LIMERICK, and province of MUNSTER, 16 miles (W. W.) from Limerick, and 113 miles (S.W.by W.) from Dublin; containing 2799 inhabitants, of which number; 1515 are in the town.
The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Limerick, with the rectory of Lismakeery and the vicarage of Iverus united, forming the union of Askeaton, in the patronage of Sir Matthew Blakiston, Bart.
In the Roman Catholic divisions the parish is the head of a union or district, comprising the parishes of Askeaton, Iverus, Lismakeery, and Tomdeely ; there are two chapels, one in the town, and one at Ballystean, both thatched buildings.

Askeaton (Eas Geitine in Irish) is a town located in County Limerick, Ireland on the N69 road about two miles upstream from the River Shannon's Estuary.
The castle was abandoned to crown forces in 1580 - its walls blown up by the fleeing Spanish defenders - after the fall of Carrigafoyle Castle to the English during the Desmond Rebellions.
The railway line to Foynes passes north of the town, but Askeaton Railway Station was closed to passenger traffic on 4th April 1963 and freight in 1974.

Askeaton Friary or Abbey, a Franciscan monastery, was probably founded in 1389 by Gearóid Iarla, poet and Fourth Earl of Desmond.
While there was undoubtedly an unusually high incidence of animal disease on a small number of farms in the Askeaton area, in addition to the Somers and Ryan farms, neither the number of farms involved nor their geographical spread, suggests that this provides evidence of a phenomenon affecting the wider Askeaton area as a whole.
That said, the metal compounds emitted in the Askeaton area, or which are found in dust blown from the waste lagoons at the Aughinish Alumina plant, also occur naturally in normal soils at relatively high levels, and would therefore not be regarded as particularly harmful.

Obviously, with a name like Askeaton, many of the settlers in that area were Irish and among the other family names were Summers, Wall, Clancy, Meehan, Carroll, Clune, Brick, Cleary, Colwell, Conroy, Cughlin, Farrell, Fox, Hayes, Keating, Sheehan, Powers and Rudden.
She was the sister of John Rehill who, with his family, had recently arrived in the Askeaton area.
According to Joan, who lives in the Milwaukee area, about 100 miles south of Askeaton, there is still a strong tradition of Irish music and dance in the area, with the annual Milwaukee Irish Fest, the largest festival of Irish music in the world.

A long ball from midfield wasn't dealt with by the Pallaskenry defence and the Askeaton forward got his foot to the ball and rolled past the keeper into the bottom corner.
The same can also be said for Askeaton as they had very few opportunities in the second half to add to their lead as the Pallas defence stood firm.
That one goal from Askeaton in the first half proved to be enough but Pallaskenry can take heart from their performance as they never gave up but in the end, it just wasn't our day.

Askeaton - Eas Geiphtine, the "waterfall of Gephtine" is situated on the banks of the river Deel.
Askeaton was a great stronghold of the Earls of Desmond and Askeaton Castle, home to the Earls of Desmond, was built around 1348.
Askeaton Franciscan Friary is believed to have been built around 1400, by the third Earl of Desmond Gerald.

The Askeaton gardaí also cover an area some 15 miles west, almost reaching Glen on the Kerry border.

As the animals died in their hundreds, farming families around the Askeaton and Ballysteen areas felt powerless - particularly those of Liam Somers and Justin Ryan who between them had lost roughly 200 animals and watched their neighbours succumb to all manner of unusual diseases.
Although the farmers around Askeaton practised industrial agriculture for the benefit of the national economy, they were unwittingly up against a global hierarchy - in the form of the chemical industry.
Interestingly it is the belief of Somers and several other Askeaton farmers that the government is admitting that the problem has not been caused by the farmers.
