  Askold and Dir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Askold (Haskuldr in Old East Norse and Höskuldr in Old West Norse) and Dir (Dyri in both dialects of Old Norse) were according to the Primary Chronicle, two of Rurik's men who ruled Kiev in the 870s.
Askold and Dir settled in the town and gathered a large number of fellow Varangians and began to rule the town and the land of the Polyane.
A Kievan legend identifies Askold's burial mound with Uhorska Hill, where Olga of Kiev later built two churches, devoted to Saint Nicholas and to Saint Irene.

Askold Stode was born 789 AC in a little village in the land of Göingar in what today is western Småland in Sweden.
When Askold got older it fell naturally that he became one of the defenders of the village and thus was trained in the use of one of the three swords the village owned together since he showed great talent with weapons of all kind.

Askold's Grave is a part of the park complex on the right bank of the Dnepr River.
A wooden cross indicates that the young Ukranian patriots killed in the battle with the Bolsheviks near the Kruty station were buried in the cemetery in 1918.
Near Askold's Grave there is a monument to Apostle Andrew the First-Called, a very important saint for Kiev and its citizens.

Askold Fedorovich Murov, Russian composer and teacher, was born 5 February, 1928 in Engels (Pokrovsk) in the Saratov region on the Volga River, He died 7 June, 1996 in Novosibirsk (Siberia).
He graduated from the Novosibirsk State Civil Engineering Academy (1946-51), receiving also a musical education in choral conducting at the Novosibirsk State Conservatory in 1962 under the guidance of Matvey Akimovich Gozenpud, and was a member of the faculty there from 1961 to 1996, becoming a full professor in 1983.
Dmitry Shostakovich once said, “Askold Murov’s music arouses your admiration by its profound emotional character and high professionalism.” His music is both deep and versatile, showing a conceptual and philosophical bent of mind, and a desire to deal with the burning problems of his time through music.

The Russian steam frigate Askold appeared in Nagasaki Harbor in July 1858, transporting Vice Admiral Efvim Putiatin from China for the purpose of concluding a new commercial treaty with Japan.
When the Askold had nearly reached its destination, it was met by a ferocious typhoon that blew it a considerable distance back out to sea, causing extensive damage.
Yet when the Askold finally limped into Nagasaki, it was uncertain how the local authorities would greet its arrival and to what extent they would cooperate with the urgent needs for repair to the ship and restoration of health to its crew.

The torpedo net shelves on the WEM Askold are etched brass parts.
I'm not a big enthusiast of etched brass, but railing is a nice touch in 1:700 scale and the WSW Askold would benefit from its addition.
