Aslockton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aslockton is a village and civil parish twelve miles (19 km) east of Nottingham, England and two miles east of Bingham on the north bank of the River Smite opposite Whatton.
The name of the village comes from the Danish and Saxon name Haslachstone and became Aslacton before becoming the modern Aslockton.
Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury 1533–1553, was born in Aslockton and spent his childhood in a cottage that still exists today.

ASLOCKTON is justly proud of its old associations; at all events, it makes the most of them and of the title to lasting fame which its connection with the Cranmers gives it.
Thomas Cranmer, whose slab we have described, married Agnes, daughter of Laurance Hatfield, of Willoughby, Notts, and resided at the old manor-house at Aslockton.
Leland speaks of Aslockton and the ‘heire of the Cranmers,’ the Archbishop’s elder brother, and it would be to his house that the martyr resorted when visiting the neighbourhood.

From Thoroton the party proceeded to Aslockton, the birth place of Archbishop Cranmer [1489—1554] where is the mound which is believed to have stood in the garden of the Cranmer family.
It is still known as "Cranmer's Mound," and that it formed part of the pleasure grounds of the lord of the manor is most probable when we remember that such elevations were in high repute in the sixteenth century.
Here there is an incised slab, to the memory of the Archbishop's father, who died in 1501, bearing a still legible inscription, also the arms of Cranmer and Aslockton, and the figure of a man with flowing hair and gown with a purse by his side.

 Aslockton signal box
Aslockton may be seen as a development from the 1874 design at Allington Junction.
Retaining the four-pane-high windows that reach right up into the eaves, the significant difference was the abandonment of the huge overhang of the gables in favour of something more conventional.
Although this line is still in use, Aslockton box was abolished on 13th March 1977 as a result of a general reduction in traffic and consequential rationalisation of layout and signalling.

However, Aslockton showed the fighting spirit they have developed this season to equalise with a superb volley from their own Captain BEARDSLEY and end the first half 1 - 1.
It was probably the most disappointing Aslockton performance this season, coming as it did after three strong showings against the top three teams in the league, and we need to raise our game for our final two matches and shake off the post-illness and winter blues.
