Aspelta was a ruler of the kingdom of Kush (c.
According to his inscriptions, Aspelta was selected as ruler by a committee of twenty-four religious and military leaders.

Aspelta's armies were defeated; the holy city of Napata was attacked and burned; and Aspelta fled to his southern capital Meroe, which henceforth became the chief royal residence of Kush.
Aspelta is shown kneeling in front of the god Amun, who puts his hand on the king's head to indicate that he is his choice to be ruler.
Aspelta had early political problems, for an inscription dated to "year 2" of his reign, is an edict sentencing to death several priests for committing a crime that could only be described indirectly.

Kush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 591 BC the Egyptians under Psammetik II invaded Kush, perhaps because Kush ruler Aspelta was preparing to invade Egypt, and sacked Napata before withdrawing north.
It is clear from the records that Aspelta's successors had their capital at Meroe, considerably farther south than Napata.
The exact date this change was made is uncertain but some historians believe it was during Aspelta's reign, in response to the Egyptian invasion of Lower Nubia.

Anlamani (623–593) campaigned against the nomadic Blemmyes and was succeeded by Aspelta (593–568).
In 591, Psamtek II (595–589) invaded Kush and captured Napata (See 747–656), and Aspelta moved the capital south to Meroë, near the Sixth Cataract.
B.C.E. Meroë became the political capital, but Meroitic rulers continued to be buried at Napata (which was recaptured) to the end of the fourth century.

 Egypt: The Nubian Pyramids
Aspelta's in particular weighed 15.5 tons and had a lit weighing four tons, carved with Pyramid Texts, chapters form the Book of the Dead, and depicting various Egyptian gods.
No evidence has really surfaced about why this transfer was made, though there is some speculation that the Meroe may have slowly gained importance beginning as early as 590 BC, after Psamtik II campaigned in northern Nubia.
He may have defeated King Aspelta's army and marched on Napata, but much of this is very uncertain.

 MEROITIC CHRONOLOGY: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS
The succession of the terms of government and thus the reigns of the first nine rulers (from Kashta to Anlamani) can in the main be accepted as reliable.
Aspelta is generally recognized as a contemporary of the invasion waged by Psametichos II (591 B.C.= third year of government of Psametichos II = second year of government of Aspelta who accordingly reigned from 593 to 568 B.C.).
From Aspelta to Harsiyotef (according to Hintze from 568 to 369 B.C.) there are only slight deviations in the estimated dates of the different systems of cgronology; the succession of the pyramids and also of the rulers and their terms of government can be accepted as rather secure.

These discoveries "represent a significant contribution to the history of ancient Sudan and without a doubt count among the masterpieces of sculpture worldwide," the team said in the statement.
