The family is closely related to Asphodelaceae and may sometimes be difficult to distinguish on gross morphology.
Representatives of Asphodelaceae, however, always contain anthraquinones, displayed especially by the rhizomes which are yellowish when cut; in Anthericaceae the rhizome is always whitish inside.
The seeds of Asphodelaceae are covered by a thin aril, making them brownish to greyish and dull; in Anthericaceae the seeds are always fl, sometimes glossy.

Xeronemataceae were provisionally placed in Asphodelaceae by Takhtajan (1997) and in Hemerocallidaceae by Clifford et al.
Both Hemerocallidaceae and Xanthorrhoeaceae have ovaries that are probably secondarily superior and that have infra-locular septal nectaries (Rudall 2002, 2003); Rudall (2003) suggested a close morphological relationship between Hemerocallidaceae and Asphodelaceae.

Xanthorrhoeaceae, Hemerocallidaceae, Asphodelaceae - UBC Botanical Garden Forums
We have chosen to recognize three individual family names: Xanthorrhoeaceae, Hemerocallidaceae and Asphodelaceae.
Name changes are recorded in our plant records; however, labeling of individual plants may not reflect these changes until the completion of a subsequent inventory.
The two families are readily distinguished by their inflorescence, leaf arrangement, pollen and seeds.
