Within the leptosporangiate ferns, the first five orders, Gleicheniales through Marsileales, were apparently derived from polyploidy of n=11.
Lindseales, Dennstaedtiales and Aspleniales were apparently derived from polyploidy of n=12, while Hypolepidales were probably derived from n=13.
Pteridales may have developed from n=14, but this is much less clear.

The family Aspleniaceae of (Any of numerous flowerless and seedless vascular plants having true roots from a rhizome and fronds that uncurl upward; reproduce by spores) ferns is the only family in the order Aspleniales.
Many workers today consider this family of solely consisting of the genus (In some classification systems placed in family Polypodiaceae) Asplenium.
Camptosorus, the Walking fern, freely hybridizes with other (Any of various chiefly rock-inhabiting ferns of the genus Asplenium) spleenworts, and Phyllitis, the Hart's-tongue fern, also has several known hybrids.
