‘Assault on Precinct 13’ is an action packed remake of John Carpenters 1976 movie of the same name, where the well-used good cop v bad cop scenario is played out with plenty of twists and surprises to keep you guessing just who are the goodies and who are the baddies.
All the players inside the precinct join forces to protect themselves from the outside invaders even though they shouldn’t, and it’s Fishburne’s character who realises that it’s him they want as he is about to rat on the dirty cops of Detroit.
Essentially, ‘Assault on Precinct 13’ is well worth a viewing and offers much in suspense and the thrill stakes, even if we do somehow know what the ending will be, long before it arrives.

Assault on Precinct 13 is a cut above in all departments.
The movie may not deserve its cast, but I suspect they were attracted to a fun genre piece they didn't have to be embarrassed about.

Though the new movie doesn't quite capture Carpenter's vacant, coldblooded tone, it remains true to itself, which is an accomplishment in a movie world dominated by halfhearted PG-13 efforts.
Though these movies may provide a convenient place to drop the kids for a few hours, they are superficial and hollow exercises.
The movie also provides, finally, another good role for Fishburne outside of The Matrix, and the rest of the cast is almost overqualified for the movie, especially when you consider that talents such as Leguizamo and Gabriel Byrne are given a fairly small amount of screen time.

Although Richet's Assault on Precinct 13 departs significantly from Carpenter's original narrative, the new version has a similar, "urban western" sensibility (Carpenter was inspired by Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo).
As for Hawke, it's not that he's patently unbelievable portraying a cop—he was surprisingly convincing as the LAPD rookie opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day—nor is he outright terrible in Assault on Precinct 13.

The pace of the film is deliberately slow and "stately", as Carpenter says in the audio commentary, in the fashion of movies made in the '40s and '50s.
As Leigh, one of the station clerks, Laurie Zimmer is practically a caricature of the tough-as-nails Noir dame of the '40s; her smoky voice and sexy 'Girl Next Door' looks make the character work.
This is a very dark movie, too, particularly in the last 30 minutes, but scenes are clear even when shot in ambient light using fog filters, as much of the station interiors were.

Even though the movie was made in 1976, the scene where the street gang cruises around and considers who to kill in a random drive-by shooting feels all too contemporary.
"Assault" is Carpenter's much ballyhooed attempt to update the "Western" genre of film, and specifically "Rio Bravo," by bringing the genre cliches from the plains of the Southwest to the gritty streets of L.A. In many respects, "Assault" is a triumph, but in other key areas, "Assault" falls flat on its face.
Carpenter uses a surprisingly large bag of director's tricks for a guy making his second movie to create some genuine tension in "Assault," and the entire movie is marked by a darkness and a bleakness that is quite powerful.

On a wintry New Year’s Eve, the cops of Detroit’s Precinct 13 sit toasting the night away watching the snow fall.
The action is precise and resourcefully staged, the acting is top-notch and the whole thing is filmed in a series of misty blues, piercing whites and striking contrasts they really get under the skin.
Even if it does go off the rails a bit during the final ten minutes (and while Carpenter’s original themes are sorely missed), it’s still enjoyable, and for a January sure to be crowded with rejects and missed opportunities that’s the best recommendation of all.
