S.C. Artillary, Co. A, their small field artillary, positioned in the dunes beside Wagner, protected the battery's flank and threw cannister fire across the front wall of the Battery.

On July 18, 1863, he led the 54th, in conjunction with two brigades of white troops, in an assault on Confederate Battery Wagner.
In the unsuccessful charge, the fl troops proved themselves to be fully capable of standing up to enemy fire but lost about one quarter of their men, including Colonel Shaw.
The rebels in the battery were so outraged by the Union commanders arming fls that they decided to insult the white officer by burying him in a common grave with his fl enlisted men.

He forgave the filmaker's use of artistic license because Glory is a powerful movie that will go a long way in correcting the distortions and romanticizations which have been perpetuated by Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind.
While it is impossible to argue with such a conclusion, I feel that all self-respecting Civil War addicts should never miss an opportunity to set the record straight regarding the errors in Glory, as well as to place Colonel Shaw's assault in proper perspective as to the overall contest for Battery Wagner.
The effort of the 54th at Battery Wagner did a lot to legitimize the use of fl troops throughout the North.

Isaac Sawyer was laid to rest in an unmarked grave, the fl soldier who fought with the Union army to liberate slaves in the South will be honored with a marble headstone.
Sawyer, a veteran of the celebrated 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, was part of the legendary assault on Battery Wagner on Morris Island in 1863 that later became the subject of the movie "Glory."
When the war ended, Sawyer settled in Charleston, where he married and raised a family.
