Federal assault weapons ban - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) was a provision of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law of the United States that included a prohibition on the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.
On March 2, 2004, with 'sunset' of the ban on the horizon, staunch anti-gun Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) attached a ten-year extension to the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban to the Senate's Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
The VPC estimates that more than one million assault weapons have been manufactured since the ban's passage in 1994."[4] A notable argument against this is that the VPC changed their definition of "assault weapon" after the ban was passed, so that weapons which looked like the banned weapons were also "assault weapons".

Weapons manufactured, imported, or configured in such a manner prior to the passage of the 1994 Act were "grandfathered" as having a "pre-ban" status.
Initially, the idea of a law to ban assault weapons seemed to enjoy widespread support among both the American people and members of Congress; but later, after the ban was already passed, the American people began to wakeup to the fact that the promises of safer streets had been empty and impotent.
Artificially inflated values of so-called pre-ban weapons will drop dramatically, as brand-new weapons roll off the factory milling machines and the cosmetically castrated weapons of the ten-year prohibitionary period will be legally modified by their owners to include all of those features once declared "too evil" to be on a modern civilian's rifle.

Ban on assault weapons didn't reduce violence - The Washington Times: Nation/Politics - August 17, 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The 102-page NIJ report said the assault-weapons ban was intended to "reduce gunshot victimizations by limiting the national stock of semiautomatic firearms with large ammunition capacities," although it said the automatic-weapons provision of the bill targeted a "relatively small number of weapons" based on features that had little to do with the weapons' operation.
The report said assault weapons were used in 2 percent of gun crimes reported nationwide before enactment of the 1994 ban.
The report said the relatively rare use of assault weapons in crimes was attributable to a number of factors: Most assault weapons are rifles, which are used much less often than handguns, a number of the weapons were barred from importation before the ban was enacted, and the weapons are expensive and difficult to conceal.

 assault weapons ban - UNCONSTITUTIONAL
Since the federal law was passed in 1994 to ban the sale of so called "assault rifles" more and more research has come forward showing that this law has had no effect on gun related crime or violence as it was intended to eliminate.
Indeed if this ban has not caused any reduced violence or measurable decrease in crimes directly associated with the weapons that were banned then what purpose does this law serve but to restrict and eventually completely ban the lawful use of rifles and pistols by US Citizens and residents.

But the odds she faces to pass the weapons ban in the current Congress are probably steeper than they were in 1993, when the Senate narrowly approved the ban, or last March, when it passed 52-47 before dying in the body.
Though the phrase "assault weapon" conjures up images of the rapid-fire machine guns used by the military, in fact the weapons covered by the ban function the same as any semiautomatic hunting rifle; they fire the exact same bullets with the exact same rapidity and produce the exact same damage as hunting rifles.
While the so-called "assault weapons" ban was never really at the forefront of the presidential race, we don't need to be reminded of the promise anti-gun forces made that voters would retaliate en masse against President Bush for not actively pushing for the ban's renewal, resulting in a decisive defeat.

The term "assault weapon" was coined by the anti-gun movement in an attempt to demonize certain weapons and blur the line between automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
The ban was passed with the intent of decreasing crime.
Also, these sorts of weapons are rarely used in crimes (less than 2 percent) so are hardly the choice of gang members, drug dealers, etc. Even Dianne Feinstein agreed with this when she pushed the ban through in 1994.

Military assault rifles, also used by a variety of American police agencies, must be capable of semi-automatic single trigger pull firing, limited-automatic multi-shot “bursts,” such as bursts of three shots with each trigger pull, or just continuous uninterrupted fire for as long as the trigger is depressed and until the magazine runs out of ammunition.
The term "assault weapon," or "assault rifle," is valid only when describing long arms capable of firing fully automatic, in controlled bursts, or in single trigger-pull semi-automatic.

Eakes said she was happy when Reichert told her he was going to run for Congress because she thought she could count on him to uphold the assault-weapons ban based on his past support of it.
But Reichert admits his support of allowing the weapons ban to sunset is based on only part of the legislation -- the part that bans particular semiautomatic weapons.
The assault-weapons ban outlaws such clips, but because the prohibition is linked to the ban to the firearms themselves, the whole bill should be abolished, Reichert said.
