Assemblage 23 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Assemblage 23 is a futurepop/synthpop/EBM musical group from Seattle, WA (US); its sole member is Tom Shear.
Assemblage 23 was officially born in 1988, after Shear experienced the industrial dance music played by an opening DJ for Depeche Mode.
Assemblage 23 released a fourth album, Storm, in October 2004; the first single from that album, "Let the Wind Erase Me", was released in August of the same year.

In 1988 at a Depeche Mode concert, Assemblage 23 was born.
At first, Assemblage 23 was more of a hobby for Shear rather than a permanent project.
However, Blanchard's interest was not in Assemblage 23 but in Nerve Filter, although, a few Assemblage 23 tracks would later be released on several compilations.

assemblage (art) - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about assemblage (art)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The term was first used in the 1950s by French painter Jean Dubuffet to describe his collages and figures created from pieces of wood, sponge, paper, and glue.
Rooted in cubist collage and the early sculptural assemblages of Picasso and the Italian Futurists, particularly Umberto Boccioni, the technique was later experimented with by the Dadaists and surrealists for its symbolic and satirical possibilities.
The Dada revival of the 1950s and early 1960s reaffirmed it as a technique central to much of 20th-century art, typified in the ‘combine’ paintings of US pop artist Robert Rauschenberg.

Assemblage 23 is one of the newer and less known darkwave bands that I have caught wind of in the past couple of years.
They have a sound that to me is reminiscent of the Cruxshadows, the lyrical capabilities of both bands are mindblowing, and with the pulse pounding rhythym of the industrial darkwave music is most certainly is as intoxicating.
Some of the better songs they have done and the ones I most recomend, would be firstly "King of Insects" second "Opened" and third would have to be the remix of Funker Vogt's farewell song "Dissapoint" any of these three songs would certainly be enough for most music lovers.

Assemblage 23: album reviews and ratings
Gradually, industrial elements began working their way into Shear's music until, in 1991, he renamed the project (from the previous "Man on a Stage") to Assemblage 23 and began focusing on the sound exclusively.
Tom Shear's Assemblage 23 project is lauded for crossing boundaries between industrial and synthpop, using elements of both but belonging exclusively to neither.
It's not unknown for Assemblage 23 albums to end on a slow song, but this one at least tops King of Insects and Lullaby, the closing numbers from the previous two albums.

Splendid Magazine reviews Assemblage 23: Defiance
Assemblage 23 answers this question over the course of ten tracks by showing just how natural a combination this can be.
By virtue of his rich melodies and club-friendly beats, Assemblage 23, like many of the more accessible darkwave bands, invokes a distinct sense of '80s nostalgia.
The combination is particularly effective because it plays the smooth strings of the chorus against a dissonant, punchy verse -- a juxtaposition that gives the tune an extra dose of edgy energy.

'Assemblage 23' is a sole artist opinion and Tom has created a vast plethora of ambient and hight industrialised electronica.
With a keen grasp of sound engineering (not to be confused with EBM originality) and the lyrical understanding that typifies-and oftentimes surpasses-what is viewed as greatness, he's actually made three worthwhile releases in a row, earning both my respect and my money as he perfects his abilities to craft a sonically emotional landscape.
For those who have not heard Assemblage 23 before: Think of the lyrical tone of Nine Inch Nails mixed with the clear vocals and fast high energy electronic music of VNV Nation.

Just a hint, really: So Assemblage 23 is playing at the Vogue tonight, and I've been tossing around whether or not I want to go -- balancing the desire to see a decent band with the fact that it's on a Wednesday night.
I don't often go on Friday nights, as I'm generally a bit tired at the end of the work week, and I know more of the music on Saturdays, but getting out of the house just seemed to be the thing to do tonight.

He has a tendency to end all sentences by going down on a minor note, thus upping the “sadness” factor, but also my annoyance factor.
However “Storm” is way better than “Defiance” musicwise in my opinion, and should keep Assemblage 23 in the top area of the electro-/futurepop genre for a while longer.
But keep an eye out for the closing track “30kft”, an out of character, slow, beautiful and very sad piece that ends the album nicely.

Assemblage 23’s fourth studio album sees Tom Shear take his melodic EBM (by some called FuturePop, a term that Tom hates) to new levels.
The one slower track that we are treated to, is "30kft", and it’s a brilliant track, portraying a man on an airplane about to crash, calling home to his loved ones.

 Assemblage 23 - Failure
The second album from Assemblage 23 - American Tom Shear - achieves the not inconsiderable feat of improving on the debut “Contempt”.
Assemblage 23 has often been compared to VNV Nation, and while there are similarities (dance-friendly EBM, largely untreated vocals, truckloads of melody), the melodic warmth is offset by cold synth work that recalls De/Vision or early Depeche Mode.
While opening track “Naked” could easily have come off “Contempt”, it is followed by “I Am The Rain”, and a thumping beat and chunky distorted bassline suddenly become very welcome additions.

Assemblage 23 got its start in 1988, when at a Depeche Mode concert, founder Tom Shear heard the opening DJ spinning industrial dance music.
This band (who changed names with almost every gig, but was known collectively as the Advocates) would provide Shear with his first ever live performance experiences.
When Shear entered college, he was doing Assemblage 23 almost exclusively, but soon ended up collaborating with two friends, Mike Ukstins and Matt Guenette, on music as well with the hope of doing some live performances eventually.
