 Assembly of Experts
The idea of an assembly of experts was born out of the post-revolution debates concerning a constituent assembly for drawing up a constitution.
The balloting for the Second Assembly of Experts, as required by the constitution, was held in December 1982 for the election of 83 members, of whom 76 were elected in the first round and the rest in the second round.
On 23 February 1999 the third Assembly of Experts, which was elected in October 1998, held its inaugural meeting in the holy city of Qom.

Iran goes to the polls today to elect the Majlis-e Khobregan, or Assembly of Experts, a body of 86 senior clerics who may be called on to choose the country's next supreme leader.
A great deal of controversy preceded the semi-annual meeting of the Assembly of Experts in early March, and this is not surprising because the popularly elected body of 86 clerics supervises and selects Iran's top political and religious leader.
However, the committee responsible for the Assembly of Experts' internal regulations did hold a meeting on February 12 to discuss the most recent proposal, although its outcome was not revealed (Etemad, February 15, 2006).

Although the date for the election of Assembly of Expert members has not been officially declared yet (July or October 2006 have been suggested), in Iran’s evolving world of politics, the next election for the Assembly will have important consequences for the future direction of the politics of the Islamic Republic.
