Assimilation (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Star Trek fictional universe, assimilation is the process by which the Borg, a race of cyborgs, integrate beings and cultures into their collective.
Later, in the movie Star Trek: First Contact, the method of assimilation was enhanced with the more efficient injection of nanoprobes into individuals.

Star Trek is Roddenberry's major achievement, and a major one it is. Imagine the show being on television in its time, between 1966 and 1969, the original pilot episode, 'The Cage', having been produced in 1965 already, with a different crew.
Star Trek itself had been an asset at the times of resurrecting it to the TV screen, but at the time of Voyager, the X-Files was in its second season, with its growing success making other genre shows possible.
Star Trek is about hope and a strong belief in the benevolence of the future, so a farther future may have less conflict, be so advanced that you'd be too detached from today's political and social problems.

Data (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Data, played by Brent Spiner, is a character in the Star Trek fictional universe.
During the Borg invasion of the Federation in 2366-7, Data successfully interfaced with Locutus of Borg (an assimilated Captain Picard who was abducted then rescued), accessed the Borg collective consciousness, and introduced a command into a low-level program pathway that forced the Borg to regenerate.
The ending for Star Trek: Nemesis gave slight suggestion that B-4 may become a replacement for Data, thus possibly becoming Data in the process and mirroring Spock's rebirth and the cryptic suggestions alluding to it at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Jean-Luc Picard is a character in Star Trek, the captain of the USS Enterprise-D and the USS Enterprise-E.

His assimilation and time spent in the collective is later revealed to have had a profoundly disturbing effect on Picard's life; as a result, Picard was able to partially reconcile long-simmering differences with his brother, Robert.

Dauntless, with the promise of returning to Earth much quicker.

Star Trek: First Contact is the eighth major motion picture production out of Gene Roddenberry's series, and those of us who've seen all eight Star Trek films know that they haven't all been, shall we say, stellar.
Starring the "Next Generation" crew with Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) at the helm, First Contact is a nicely packaged and generally entertaining sci-fi adventure that should please both Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike (or is it Trekkers...?).

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and First Contact (#8 in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race.
Guest stars James Cromwell (The Sum of All Fears, Babe) and Alfre Woodward join the cast of TNG as warp-drive inventor Zefram Cochrane and his friend and assistant Lily, who add a certain mixture of edginess and wit to the film.
While "Star Trek: First Contact" rewrites too much of the original TV series' history--a debilitating addiction the current production people can't seem to shake--it delivers a rollicking adventure that is more in keeping with Captain Kirk's episodes than any other "TNG" film.
