Associated British Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the event, ABC were offered the London weekdays franchise on condition that it merged with Rediffusion, London.
In this case, the parent company was the Associated British Picture Corporation (ABPC), who initially did not wish to become involved in the new broadcasting system.
ABC was one of a number of commercial television companies set up in the 1950s by cinema chains in an attempt to safeguard their business by getting involved in television which was taking away their cinema audiences.

 Rediffusion
Associated Rediffusion was determined to be the long-arm of the 1930s extending into the 1950s - continuing the dying notion that Britain and its Empire where something important in the world.
This austere approach was made more striking by Associated Rediffusion's neighbour, the weekend contractor ATV, which was light-hearted and showbusiness-orientated - the opposite of everything AR stood for and determined to live down to the role critics had chosen for the new commercial service.
Rediffusion was the face of a swinging, happy London in a bright, shiny new UK.

The parent company, BET, took a minority stake in the successor company, Thames Television, which was formed from a merger of Rediffusion and ABC Television, while most of the staff went to work for London Weekend Television.
In 1964 the directors had a change of heart, pensioning off Captain Brownrigg to the south coast and a directorship of the TV Times, and rebranding the station as "Rediffusion, London", with a very hip 1960s style, the face of swinging London in the shiny prosperous new Britain.

The solution adopted was to use staff and facilities from the outgoing London weekday company Associated-Rediffusion.
Although Rediffusion was not happy with the arrangement, the two companies established a new organisation that was 51% owned by ABC and 49% by Rediffusion.

A commonly asked question is which way the adastral turned in Associated-Rediffusion and Rediffusion, London idents, clocks and other presentation elements.
In the case of Rediffusion clocks in general - for both companies - including Mitch, A-R's heraldic station clock for many years, the adastral rotates continuously anticlockwise - or at least, it did in the example we have on film from 1959 (see the film segment in Seen and Heard).
