Computational linguistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Computational linguists were formerly usually computer scientists who had specialized in the application of computers to the processing of a natural language.
Since computers had proven their ability to do complex mathematics much faster and more accurately than humans, it was thought to be only a short matter of time before the technical details could be taken care of that would allow them the same remarkable capacity to process language.
Computational linguistics was born as the name of the new field of study devoted to developing algorithms and software for intelligently processing language data.

The Association for Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing (ACLCLP) was initiated in 1988 by the program committee of the first conference on Chinese computational linguistics (ROCLING I).
Ching-Chun Hsieh was elected to be the chair of the founding committee and the first president of the association for computational linguistics and Chinese language processing.
In its fifteen year history, the ACLCLP goal has been to conduct research in computational linguistics, to promote the utilization and development of computational linguistics, to encourage research in the field of Chinese computational linguistics both domestically and internationally, and to maintain contact with international groups who have similar goals and to cultivate academic exchange.

This introduction to computational linguistics was written by Jerry R. Hobbs of SRI International for the Linguistic Society of America.
It models the computational task of making inferences (or acquiring knowledge) about the structure that lies behind some set of data without any direct access to that structure, e.g., figuring out the morphemes in a set of words without any knowledge whatsoever of the language from which the words are drawn.

Диалог. Дайджест - PACLING'03: Pacific Association for Computational LINGuistics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
PACLING (Pacific Association for Computational LINGuistics) has grown out of the very successful Japan-Australia joint symposia on natural language processing held in November 1989 in Melbourne, Australia and in October in Iizuka, Japan in 1991.
The first five meetings of the retitled PACLING, a name designed to express the wider membership, took place in Vancouver, Canada in 1993, in Brisbane, Australia in 1995, in Ohme, Tokyo, Japan in 1997, in Waterloo, Canada in 1999, and in Kitakhyshu in 2001.
PACLING'03 will be a low-profile, high-quality, workshop-oriented meeting whose aim is to promote friendly scientific relations among Pacific Rim countries, with emphasis on interdisciplinary scientific exchange demonstrating openness towards good research falling outside current dominant "schools of thought", and on technological transfer within the Pacific region.

PACLING '95 will be a low-profile, high-quality, workshop- oriented meeting whose aim is to promote friendly scientific relations among Pacific Rim countries, with emphasis on interdisciplinary scientific exchange showing openness towards good research falling outside current dominant "schools of thought," and on technological transfer within the Pacific region.
The conference is a unique forum for scientific and technological exchange, being smaller than ACL, COLING or Applied NLP, and also more regional with extensive representation from the Western Pacific (as well as the Eastern).
The title page must include: author's name, postal address, e-mail address (if applicable), telephone and fax numbers; a brief 100-200 word summary; and some key words for classifying the submission.
