Industrial archaeology, like other branches of archaeology, is the study of the past, but with a focus on industry or industrial heritage.
Dedicated industrial archaeology and industrial heritage courses are usually at post-graduate level, and are offered by two universities in North America and in many countries in Europe, while the Michigan Technological University also has a doctorate program.
Industrial architecture, mineral extraction, heritage-based tourism, power technology, adaptive re-use of industrial buildings and transport history are just some of the themes that could be investigated by society members.

Their thesis (strongly based to the work of Anthony Giddens at the London School of Economics) was that industrial archaeology has traditionally been strong on technical detail, but poor on the use of social theory as a way of looking at the process of industrialisation.
He challenged the traditional view of the industrial revolution as a “wave of gadgets”, and argued that social and economic factors played a major role in change.

The award was made at the annual AIA Conference Dinner at Nottingham University, when the President Professor Angus Buchannan presented a cheque and a certificate to Anne & Jim Andrews, respectively Editor and Chairman of SIAS.
Although the area in question is now mainly rural with a smattering of small towns and villages, in the past it was one of the cradles of the industrial revolution with the power provided by the local rivers and streams being applied to over 20 different applications.
