Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), noted Black scholar and historian and son of former slaves, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, which was later renamed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).

His dream for ASALH was to archive sociological and historical data, publish books, promote the study of Afro-American life and history and encourage racial harmony through the organization and work of clubs and schools.
In 1916, ASALH published the first issue of the "Journal of Negro History", a highly respected and scholarly digest which was followed by the "Negro History Bulletin", a widely circulated historically oriented magazine.

In 1912, Woodson the son of former slaves and a native of Virginia, became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University.
In 1915, he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History —now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—which he used as his scholarly vehicle to promote both the study and the legitimacy of African American history.
From 1915 until his death in 1950, Woodson operated both the ASALH and the journal from his Victorian-style row house in the historic Shaw neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, the Woodson house has been vacant for several years and is urgently in need of substantial repairs.

Woodson was disturbed to find that history books largely ignored the Black American population, and when they did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflect the inferior social position to which they were assigned at the time.
Woodson subsequently established the Association for the Study for Negro Life and History (now called the Association of the Study of African American Life and History) in 1916.
It goes without saying that African American people have made enormous contributions to the health and well being of this nation.
